how did you find your mid/senior level job

Hi

I’ve been in the same job for far too long since I graduated and it’s soon going to be time to move on. Feeling quite daunted by the idea of job hunting as I have no recent experience off it.

I’ll be looking at a mid-senior level management role in a multinational or top 200 UK company.

Is applying through ads still the best way and if so apart from LinkedIn where else do you look? Are recruiters any good and how do you find the right ones when there are so many? Are there a lot of jobs that never get advertised and just get filled through networks or referrals? I don’t have a very big network so this worries me a little.

Lots of companies hire directly via their own website and HR department so it is also worth looking there (like the BBC, for example). Aside from LinkedIn, which is great, I'd make a list of big companies you'd love to work for and check their websites.

And I accept all connection requests

Linked In

Make sure your profile is really good and then switch on that you are open to recruiters.

I'm moving to a new job soon as a result of re rioters contacting me and inviting me to apply for roles.

Recruiters not rioters

LinkedIn is brilliant. Get contacted by recruiters I don't know every week on it with interesting roles (as PP said, do switch the right toggle on to say you are interested).

But also not too late to build your network. I would say about 50% of the jobs I got - including my current role which I love - were through a recommendation from someone I knew in the industry. Go to networking events or industry seminars, drop likely looking recruiters a note and ask for a coffee/call to pick their brains about your career direction, have Zoom meetings with interesting people you have come across from cross-industry meetings etc.

Building a network takes time but makes finding the next role much easier.

Recruiters. Preferably look for the recruiters who have speciality in your field.

Thanks for the reminder re LinkedIn toggle showing that you’re open to opportunities. I thought I had this on but apparently they turn it off after a while so that would explain why the recruiter messages have stopped!
