The restaurant is awfully expensive for food and drinks every evening for two adults and two kids. We're staying 7 days and have eaten out some evenings.

Not sure if it's the same thing, but I have one of these and it's great for keeping a few bits cold. Can plug into the car too so great for travelling!

When I stayed in hotels I did it all the time - especially for work. I would not be subtle about it as I'm not doing anything wrong. I've had deliveroo multiple times to their foyer (various hotels). If they had a better restaurant with more variety I'd eat there, they don't though!

lifehappened · 23/07/2021 12:18

You're allowed to do that. Well in the hotels I've worked in anyway. We even order for you at concierge if you wanted takeout

newnortherner111 · 23/07/2021 12:22

Don't be messy and hope you can open windows so the smell does not linger.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/07/2021 12:52

@blue1000 - the electric cool box is our second because we found one that had wheels and a handle to pull it (even handier!). It's this one: www.millets.co.uk/15987094/hi-gear-45-litre-12v-240v-cooler-15987094/?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0emHBhC1ARIsAL1QGNe2XexlGnbrGyFv7zylOnEekUIs7mH_gn80Fr7v0OLVIB80D2GmS_gaAglqEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds and it is epic!
Bigger than the average one too and at a great price on Millets' website at the moment too.
I highly recommend it.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/07/2021 12:53

@Livpool - it's this one www.millets.co.uk/15987094/hi-gear-45-litre-12v-240v-cooler-15987094/?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0emHBhC1ARIsAL1QGNe2XexlGnbrGyFv7zylOnEekUIs7mH_gn80Fr7v0OLVIB80D2GmS_gaAglqEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

runs off of mains if you need it too - it's bigger than the usual ones and is great.
Changed our hotel experiences for sure!

Wegobshite · 23/07/2021 12:54

It’s absolutely fine although you may want to swipe some knives and forks from the dinning room 😂
The hotel I’m in at the moment has a collection point for food deliveries like Uber Eats & Just Eat just as you walk in the reception

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/07/2021 12:55

Also, you can get smaller ones, but we've found this to be more convenient as you can pull it along rather than having to carry it :)

Isababybel · 23/07/2021 13:32

I've never thought of this as a problem or something that isnt allowed!!

headlock · 23/07/2021 13:36

@QuestionableMouse I was talking to my husband about an electric cool box. The lack of a fridge in some rooms is a pain.
Yes, we always tidy up after ourselves. Must get my 'in room' dining kit ready for next time we're away.

We've had deliveries to hotels with no issues, impressed with the organisation of people with their own cool boxes and plates!

memberofthewedding · 23/07/2021 13:58

Ive traveled single for most of my life and often brought food back to the room in the evening. Its not a lot of fun to sit in a restaurant on your own. No one has ever commented and of course I always tidied up after myself and made sure there were no crumbs left.

hellcatspangle · 23/07/2021 14:10

Of course not, it's fine. We've even had take away delivered to hotel reception before now.

BashfulClam · 23/07/2021 14:15

Totally fine. I stayed in a hotel on Sunday and some people were in the lift with fish suppers they’d just collected.

Thank you!!!!

AnnaMagnani · 23/07/2021 14:23

The whole of lockdown people in hotels have been having Deliveroo to their hotel rooms.

It's not even a subtle thing - in the morning everyone has their bags outside the door for the rubbish.

Unless you are staying at the Ritz it is totally normal.

Honeyroar · 23/07/2021 14:35

It’s known as Delsey dining in the flying crew community!

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/07/2021 14:57

Another tip (not that anyone asked!) if you've got a tray at home (you know the kind of thing that's rectangular and has handles - take it with you. It's much easier to eat food from than trying to balance a plate on the bed. I know it seems like a lot of faff taking these things - but we leave some of the stuff in the car so it's ready to take with us whenever we stop at hotels. We love a hotel break!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 23/07/2021 15:02

It's never occurred to me NOT to do this, you're taking it to your room, not the restaurant

Hobbitch · 23/07/2021 15:14

We always take our own food. Recently though my husband and I treated ourselves to a night in a nice hotel for our anniversary, and we wanted to splurge on room service for once. The menu was so shit we ended up buying dinner from the Waitrose next door.

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 23/07/2021 16:20

I also never thought this was something you shouldn't do. I've had many many hotel room picnics.

Biancadelrioisback · 23/07/2021 16:21

Yeah totally fine.

Just don't smear pizza on the ceiling something some of the guests at my old hotel used to enjoy doing

Doingtheboxerbeat · 23/07/2021 16:30

I once went down to the bar to borrow a corkscrew for my wine and ended up having drinks with the staff after their shift Grin - It was Glasgow though and I am cheeky/ friendly.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 23/07/2021 16:35

Basically you are allowed your own drinks and food in your room, was what I was meant to say.
