To ask him what is so funny?

A male colleague of mine will occasionally laugh as he greets me in person. Like I have had to open the main gate for him and he will ask how I am and I will reply but sometimes he will just laugh Hmm.
It makes me feel really self conscious and that he is laughing at my face or expressions. I am very unattractive physically so it's playing on my mind. Aibu to ask him what is so funny?

My partner has a 'giggle' that he is entirely unaware of. It's not nervous, he's not laughing at anyone, he just...giggles.

I have asked him why he does it but he swears blind he isn't giggling! From observing him I'd say it's usually in situations where he wants to put someone at ease?

Zorinindustries · 22/07/2021 23:29

Even if you were as ugly as you say, which I seriously doubt, whu would he laugh every time he saw you? That realy would be wierd.

If he was a very cruel person he might laugh once, but not every time! I'm sure your looks aren't so funny as to amuse him each time you see him.
Think about it sensibly and you will agree that is it incredibly unlikely that this is the case.

TheNestedIf · 22/07/2021 23:33

He's far more likely to just be trying to put you at ease by giving you the impression your response is witty and amusing (or, perhaps you are actually witty and amusing whether you know it or not) than openly laughing at your appearance. Especially as you are bothered about your appearance to the point you maybe come across as anxious.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 22/07/2021 23:38

I do this as my hearing is poor and I don’t want to ask people to repeat themselves. I didn’t realise it could be disconcerting for others so will try to adjust this response. I’m sure that you are lovely and it’s nothing to do with how you look. Masks make it much worse to be hear people, as they can’t see me nodding and smiling I think they laugh response has gotten worse Blush

Flowers500 · 22/07/2021 23:42

I do this especially if someone is awkward, I think it's just a general trying to be friendly thing?

You're projecting your own issues onto someone else, if you try to report him to the workplace for just normal human interactions you will quickly find that you are the one they take issue with

algebrapissoff · 22/07/2021 23:46

Why don't you just say 'what the fuck is so funny Gavin?' and see what he says?

TheNestedIf · 22/07/2021 23:51

Also, I note you say he's different with everyone. So am I. I have colleagues who have a fairly ribald sense of humour, colleagues who are shy, colleagues with whom I have a bit of a language barrier, a colleague who is very genteel, colleagues with whom I can be extremely sweary, colleagues I can't trust, colleagues who are lazy and useless and so on. I respond to them all in different ways, whether I like them or not.

By all means ask him what's so funny, but don't necessarily do it in a way that shows you expect a negative response. That said, do be verbally armed in case you get one.

trunumber · 22/07/2021 23:54

He's not laughing at the way you look. That's your vulnerability because truthfully no one looks that bad that someone would repeatedly laugh about it. It's something else, it's likely not about you and you have to challenge the thought that it is because that thought must be making you feel horrible about yourself even though there is no evidence it's true.

MrsPsmalls · 23/07/2021 00:02

Of course he's not lauging at your appearance. Can you not see how paranoid and self obsessed that sounds? Maybe he does think you are unattractive and that you could do with a friend. As someone said before, people laugh to bond and to build a relationship. He is probably trying to be pleasant.

KnightandDay · 23/07/2021 00:11

Sounds to me like he's nervous.

toocold54 · 23/07/2021 00:45

I do this when I’m nervous sad I’m usually only nervous about people I fancy!

Definitely don’t call him out on it! It’s honestly not something you can help.

lolacola77 · 23/07/2021 00:47

He sounds like a horrible cunt who enjoys making you squirm. Please don't let him know it bothers you. Start laughing yourself. Fucking bastard

MiaMarshmallows · 23/07/2021 16:15

He definitely does not fancy me.

Maybe just that he can sense my awkwardness around him and is responding to that in the way of a nervous laugh then....
