Mask Question

I'm approaching 70 years old, and I work 3 days a week in a seaside town 15 miles away. 20 minute train ride from almost my doorstep, to my place of work. Hop off the train, 3 minute walk. It's a branch line, so not much used on rainy, cold, or winter days. Often have a carriage to myself. But flaming Norah, if it's school hols or a hot sunny day, the carriage is heaving!
And that's fine as well. Except nobody is wearing masks any more, even though they're mandated on trains. Notices and announcements everywhere. £200 fine for not wearing a mask. I hopped on the train yesterday, and there was no spare seat that didn't involve sitting amongst maskless teen-agers. Even their 40 + ish parents, some of whom were present, were maskless.
When the conductor came along to take fares, as soon as they all heard "tickets please" they all pulled up their chin masks or fumbled in their pockets to assure that they were being good citizens and abiding by the rules. As soon as he'd gone, of course, they dumped the masks and continued chattering and laughing and doing what teenagers do. Nothing wrong with that obviously, under normal circumstances. I will and I do just suck it up. I was young once! But I do wish we could find a way to stop this carelessness of others in this unprecedented situation. In my personal situation, it's at most, a 20 minute train journey. Is it that hard for young healthy teens (and their 40ish healthy parents) to just obey the rules of the rail service they are using?

I realise that they are also risking their own chances of catching covid as well as mine. But for the sake of 20 minutes mask wearing, they might avoid passing on a virus that likely won't kill them, but might kill me.

Why bother to save the planet for somebody who gives not a fuck about me?

Yes, a lot of people are incredibly hypocritical and selfish in relation to this (although they like to think of themselves as virtuous)

Drive if you can, and for the instances you cannot avoid public transport or crowded places, maybe buy a few surgical masks (the kind you can get at Boots) that will offer you more protection (rather than wearing the fabric ones)

Glad you found a solution that suits you, OP.

My mask doesn't get damp. And if people do manage to wet a mask it does rather imply they should wear one at all times to stop spit-talking. Or spit breathing.

Hmm

Well I'm glad you don't work a job where you have sweat dripping off you in the summer months, then. My mask gets damp from sweat and the humidity in the air - so how effective is it, really?

I don't wear one unless I absolutely have to now - they're uncomfortable, hot and make me feel incredibly unwell in this heat.

@Shoxfordian

I don’t think it is an offence anymore not to wear one and if you wear yours then there’s still protection for you op
Why do people still not understand this. The protection for someone wearing a mask, in a sea of others not wearing theirs, is minimal. It really needs everyone to wear a mask if they can.
Shoxfordian · 23/07/2021 08:39

Why is that @knittingaddict? Wearing a mask protects you from breathing in the virus if it’s over your nose and mouth properly doesn’t it?
@Zotter, thanks for that very useful link. My DD has been following her and regularly updated me on her posts
Glad @user1471453601 and @Carrotinthesky, glad it was helpful

I’d have just thought it common courtesy to take precautions during a pandemic, especially when I knew I might be sharing a space with vulnerable people.
Times have changed. Nobody cares about their neighbour any more

So true 💐

I’m so glad I live in Wales. I’m hoping Drakeford will keep masks and social distancing for a while longer - at least until all those who want the vaccine, in an attempt to protect themselves and vulnerable others, get their second vaccine 🤞

ilovesooty · 23/07/2021 18:45

If I were the OP I'd be driving to work until the summer holidays are over and the trains are quieter.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/07/2021 19:21

Aren't respirators like n95s protecting the wearer? Maybe people could get these types to feel safer.
They were mandated for public transport in some places instead of just simple masks for a while

@Shoxfordian

Why is that *@knittingaddict*? Wearing a mask protects you from breathing in the virus if it’s over your nose and mouth properly doesn’t it?
Cloth masks prevents the wearer's breath from travelling too far; in terms of protection for the wearer, they only block large droplets incoming. You wear a mask primarily to provide others. So people who are concerned cannot choose to protect themselves by wearing a mask; they are just doing their bit to protect others.
