To ask about security cameras in supermarkets

Does anyone check the footage afterwards or is just live feed for the security person at the desk to look at as things are happening?

I accidentally stole a loaf of pumpernickel bread earlier and was directly underneath a camera at the self service checkout. I put it on the scanner (put didn’t actually scan it) to free my hands up to sort through my groceries as they were coming down the conveyer belt. I scanned everything else, paid then without thinking just grabbed the loaf off the scanner and put in my bag.

I noticed on arrival the security station was not manned at the time of my visit and am worried someone will later check the footage and see what happened, I’m also worried as I used my nectar card they maybe able to pinpoint my sale and find me from my details on my account or is that too sophisticated? Can someone please explain how it works? I would go back to the shop and pay but I’m just about to start work.

it happens all the time, loads of parents giving children things to hold to keep them quiet and then forgetting theyve passed it to the child. you just passed it to the scanner instead. honestly I wouldn’t worry.

reannneeee · 22/07/2021 19:40

@HOkieCOkie.

There was a short period of my life after having my child where I had absolutely bugger all spare money after my bills. Was I meant to just suffer I because I couldn’t afford the cream which was £12? I’m glad you’ve never experienced that.

I’m sure mega businesses like Tesco will cope.

HOkieCOkie · 22/07/2021 20:43

@reannneeee don’t have a child if you can’t afford one.

AnnaBellaCruella · 22/07/2021 23:22

I do this all the time, I’m really scatty and things get ‘lost’ in all my shopping bags. I get home and find extra items that didn’t go through the scanner, it makes me quite pleased really

Nicknacky · 22/07/2021 23:24

@AnnaBellaCruella if you are so “scatty” that you are leaving shops with goods you haven’t paid for them you need to start going to a till with a member of staff.

Although why that would please you I have no idea.

Well it’s quite obvious why it pleases me. It’s like having little presents.

Nicknacky · 22/07/2021 23:39

@AnnaBellaCruella You are a thief. No other name for it. Imagine having that type of life that you are willing to brag about being a shoplifter. Pathetic.

Oh stop being so dramatic

Nicknacky · 22/07/2021 23:41

@AnnaBellaCruella How is that dramatic? You admit to taking items you garnet paid for and that makes you a shoplifter.

AnnaBellaCruella · 22/07/2021 23:42

I found a red onion in my work bag a few weeks ago, now that was funny 😁

Nicknacky · 22/07/2021 23:44

Hilarious. Thieves do tend to find that crap funny.

kierenthecommunity · 22/07/2021 23:44

is this the most middle class shoplifting ever? 😂

LadyMaid · 22/07/2021 23:49

I hung a dress on my trolley once. In asda.
Scanned the remainder of my items. Paid. Left.

Got home and realised what happened.
Went back in at a later date to pay for the dress. I wasn't apprehended at the entrance.
No-one batted an eyelid.

I paid for the dress and and left.

I was once so distracted talking and had been carrying a few bags on my arm I didn't notice myself walk out of a shop with a whole basket of shopping on my arm! I got all the way up the high street before I suddenly realised and started to panic! Despite security cameras and a large security guard in the shop nobody noticed! I raced back to the shop and apologised and was so worried I was going to get into trouble (I had images of police and sirens in my head! ) , but the person on the checkout found it funny and thanked me for coming back when I told them. Even though I'd gone back and paid I still worried for ages afterwards that the security guard would review the footage and only see me accidently walk out with the basket and miss me returning with it 5 - 10 mins later to pay! (because I only told the cashier what happened and not the security guard). I'm sure you will be totally fine accidently taking a loaf of bread. But I can totally understand your worry. If it worries you too much you could let the store know, but I'm sure they will let you have it for free. I had extra shopping delivered with a food shopping delivery once and when I phoned them to let them know, they just thanked me for phoning them and told me to keep it. I think they would apply that to your situation too when it's just bread.

Ladybirdbookworm · 23/07/2021 01:04

I once strolled out of M&S with a pair of pyjamas tucked under my arm.
I walked back in literally waving them in the air to alert every security guard that I was ‘ back in the store’ and ready to pay Grin
Thinking back I was really worried about it . OP but honestly a loaf of bread is nothing to worry about at all .

FakeColinCaterpillar · 23/07/2021 09:10

I hung some satsumas on my wrist once and only realised I hadn’t paid for them when I got home. Honest mistake- did nothing

KupoNutCoffee · 23/07/2021 09:49

My friend accidently walked out with a 12 pack pack toilet roll at uni. Popped the toilet roll in front of the till and the basket in the section. Scanned the basket stuff, grabbed the bags and the toilet roll and walked out.

I've ended up with a bouquet of flowers. Scanned stuff, felt like every other item was 'unexpected item in the bagging area' so was so frustrated with it. Scanned the flowers, 'unexpected item' assistant came over and scanned their card, carried on. Checked receipt and flowers weren't scanned Blush

ToffeePennie · 23/07/2021 10:06

I’ve done it with expensive steaks and even ale in the past. I put them in a different part of the trolley, and the handheld scanner wouldn’t accept them.
I got to the end of the shop it flashed up with “any items” and so I pressed yes. Then my toddler started screaming something chronic (he’d been stung by a bee we found out) and I was trying to calm him down, get the assistant to scan the 4 bottles and two bags of steak, and calm down my raging, sobbing mess of a child. The assistant did something I left asap, chucked the food in the boot and took my son to the pharmacy. After sorting him out I checked my receipt and none of the ale or steaks were on there.
I went back the next day, to pay for them, and was bought a bunch of flowers for going back (and the stressful situation with the nee sting) and the assistants were cooing over my son, so no harm done. They literally didn’t mind at all and the manager actually said not to worry.

Billandben444 · 23/07/2021 10:11

OP, you'll be fine. To those proud of shoplifting/stealing... wow.

Brainwave89 · 23/07/2021 10:25

Just go back settle up and no problem?

VladmirsPoutine · 23/07/2021 11:00

I wouldn't bother calling - it's not like you made off with a bottle of Grey Goose. These things happen, I've forgotten to pay for some pocket tissues once but I don't live in fear of a prison sentence should I dare step back into Tesco.

ChainJane · 23/07/2021 11:05

You didn't "accidentally steal" anything. Stealing has to be intentional, if you took an item without paying by mistake then it's not theft.

It's highly unlikely they would review the CCTV to find the missing pumpernickel bread, they'd only find see it if they happened to be investigating a more serious event that occurred at a similar time. Even then the effort of tracing you would probably cost them more than the loss of property.

If you want to be sure, go back and visit the customer service desk and tell them what happened, offering to pay.

Helendee · 23/07/2021 11:21

Why not donate the amount you should have paid to a charity? They will need it more than the supermarket.
Anyone who thinks stealing is fun needs to grow up and stop thinking they’re such an anarchist!

Helendee · 23/07/2021 11:23

@reannneeee

Prescriptions are free for a year after giving birth aren’t they?
No need to have lowered yourself to theft.
