To think 7am is way too early for a delivery?

We’ve started getting way more deliveries at around 7am since the pandemic started - possibly couriers have extended their delivery times or maybe it’s just a coincidence. It wakes me and DH up every single time as it’s usually a Saturday! And today for example we are both off on paternity/ maternity leave… I’d literally just got off to sleep after a feed and the doorbell went. I notice on DPD’s website their delivery hours are stated as 7am-5.30pm - this seems so antisocial to me, wouldn’t it be better to go later into the evening - so say 8am-6.30pm? I say I think it’s antisocial because I’d never go knocking on a neighbour’s door at 7am! What do you think?
Reasonable - yes it’s too early, I’d rather they delivered later (e.g. 8am-6.30pm)
Unreasonable - it’s fine as it is, I am up and about by 7am!

It's all just personal preference though really. Personally my 2 month old gets up at 7:30am for a feed then goes back to sleep until 10:30am so I'd prefer a delivery at 7am than at 8 after I've got the baby back down.

Before having him I used to leave for work between 7:30 and 8 even on Saturdays so again would have preferred 7. I have left notes on my door asking for it to be left or just ignored the door if I'm feeding baby for example.

Usually when companies deliver with DPD they give the the option of nominated day (and sometimes time) delivery - it does cost extra but might be worth it if you want it on a particular day/time

7am is too early for anyone to be knocking, it sets my dogs off barking, then all of the neighbours dogs start.

@JustLyra

I could understand being pissed off if a neighbours deliveries were annoying, but order stuff to be delivered then complaining about it being delivered is really odd.

Leave a note for a safe place or order for collection and problem of the door is solved.

I don’t think it’s odd! Have you never wanted to just have a little moan about something? That’s all it is don’t take it too seriously :) human nature to want a little moan every now and again!

You would hate to be my neighbour op, I have my shopping delivered at 06.00.

Peaplant20 · 22/07/2021 13:37

@OhGiveUp wouldn’t mind that at all! It was the fact of having to get up and answer the door when I was 20 mins into getting back to sleep from breastfeeding that was the issue! I never hear my neighbours doors go anyway as our houses are very sound proof.

Amazon have an option to specify a delivery day in the week - so all your packages can come at once....this might help if you use their service.

purplecorkheart · 22/07/2021 13:52

One of the couriers in our area delivers super early. His route is set by the company who quite frankly seem to throw random pins in a map. He is quite happy not to ring bell and puts parcel in safe place if you leave a note.

Livpool · 22/07/2021 14:45

I start work at 7 (wfh now) and have done for years, flexible working so can finish at 3.

I think 7-5:30 is fine

Kinsters · 22/07/2021 14:53

Wow I am so surprised by this split! 7am is not reasonable at all. Even 8am would be stretching it. But then my baby is the kind that sleeps 10-9 rather than 7-6 so I always stay up late then have a lie in. If it was happening regularly I'd be disconnecting the doorbell until I got up.

EKGEMS · 22/07/2021 14:54

We had an appliance delivered yesterday and the time window for it was 730-1130 am and they got in around 845 and frankly it was great not sitting around waiting unable to go anywhere

TotorosCatBus · 22/07/2021 14:59

Nobody is awake at 7am here but in this weather it makes sense to work when the weather is the coolest

warmfluffytowels · 22/07/2021 15:01

Most companies allow you to pick a delivery day and time, but you do have to pay extra for it.

7am is fine for me. I suspect the drivers would prefer to get up early and finish early than still be doing deliveries at 8/9pm at night (or, at 11pm like they were around here yesterday!).

Wouldn't that happen whatever time the delivery person called?
SemiFeralDalek · 22/07/2021 15:05

I had a dpd delivery at 7:10am last week and the delivery driver commented that it was nice to not have to wake someone up and that its unusual for first drops to be dressed Grin

I'd have hated 7am deliveries pre DC, when he was a baby I hated them between 11am and 3pm because that was naptime Grin

Alwayswonderedwhy · 22/07/2021 15:05

Yanbu especially when they bang on the door as if your house is on fire and wake the whole family up.

Maggiesfarm · 22/07/2021 15:05

Yes it is far too early to be knocking on anyone's door. I have quite a few deliveries but always inform the courier companies (and Royal Mail), to leave parcel or package in a safe place. I also have a note on my door saying the same. Therefore nobody knocks or rings the bell and I get a text or email (or both), saying a delivery has been made and left at xxx.

SPSN · 22/07/2021 15:16

I think 7am is a bit early but I think the couriers are struggling to get parcels delivered right now due to the increase in online shopping. We had one at quarter to 10 at night last week, I did think that was far too late Shock

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/07/2021 15:19

7.00am is too early. No one gets up until 7:35 in our house.

It’s even worse on a weekend.

Nietzschethehiker · 22/07/2021 15:24

This made me smile a bit just because I was an absolute demon (in my head and to Exdh ...I didn't actually say anything to anyone and would britishly insist all was terribly fine with a cheery smile with a thank you so much thrown in) about anyone knocking on the door or delivering anything , or frankly breathing early when DC were babies.

Actually also during native

And early evening Grin

basically at any point my non sleeping babies decided to take an ounce of pity on me if someone knocked on the door or disturbed in any way I instantly decided they were the devil incarnate. I would be furious (after I had closed be door with the above stated cheery smile) and threaten to email to complain (which I never did).

As you fairly have accepted its not that unreasonable. These days we quite like an early parcel as it means no hanging around for delivery (and we can occasionally ask if they will take DS2 with them when he's having one of those days Grin) but I do remember the sheer currency level of sleep on those days so YABU anyone disturbing sleep at that stage is in your head automatically unreasonable.

bloodywhitecat · 22/07/2021 15:36

7am was a brilliant time for me when I used to work nights as I would be home but not quite ready to go to bed, any time after 9am meant I was woken up and then would struggle to get back to sleep.

Now, as a 57yr old foster mum to a seven week old and a 1yr old, 7am is still an acceptable time.

Fine if it's veg box or milk deliveries where you're not expected to answer the door for it, but I bet they have to do a lot of hanging around waiting for people to run downstairs half-awake throwing on a dressing gown.*

Last year, our local dairy went round the doors to offer twice weekly milk deliveries. My OH signed up for it thinking it would save popping out between big shops, just to get milk. At the time their bumph made a plus point of "milk on your doorstep by 7 am, fresh for breakfast and delivered before work"

It was only one night when I was looking out the window just after midnight, admiring the snow falling and they pulled up (electric vehicle, so had never registered the quiet noise before) that I got to wondering. Consistently delivered between 12.00 and 1.00am. which was fine in winter when the front doorstep didn't get above 2 or 3 degrees but in this weather Hmm
it's fine for us as we are late to bed and know when it comes, so just listen out or check the step before we go up. It's a bit shit for anyone who doesn't know their milk has been sitting in direct sunlight for hours.

Regarding reasonable parcel delivery times: Work in a school that was open the whole way through, so out the door by 7:10 at the latest mon- Fri. would happily accept delivery from 6:30 if it meant OH wasn't getting back from dropping me off or picking me up to discover a card through the door saying we'd missed a delivery by 3 minutes.

bananaJamas · 22/07/2021 18:17

It's annoying because you are in baby/sleep deprivation stage

In 2 years time you will consider 7am to be middle of the day
