To expect not to recieve a torrent of sexist abuse from my neighbour

My arsehole neighbours child.. who is about 20and doesnt even live with them any more uses the track behind their house as a somewhere to fix his cars and burn all the crap he pulls off them, tires and seats included in a mesh thingy about 2 foot away from my fence. Today for the 3rd day on the trot he's filled the street with acrid black smoke and woke me us several time revving his engine till it backfires on his 'new' car.. I went and spoke to him and he said he could do what he liked as it was the middle of the day and he didnt care what i thought anyway as i am ' only a fucking woman', he was quite abusive. I am consideing going and having a word with his parents but i dont know if i have the guts as i work nights and last time he had a car there he woke me up every day for about 9 months, i work nights i cannot put up with that continually.

Does anyone have any advice on the legalities of burning and noise in the day time.

I wouldn't mind if it was a one off but if it's anything like last year this'll become an every day thing and i'll have to spend my winter listening to him fix his shithole cars

I'm pretty sure the black smoke is illegal, and also that incessant noise is illegal.

You must make sure you document what he does, I think the council is your next step but I'm sure someone will know for definite.

NoBiggy · 26/11/2007 16:43

Just to add. Your neighbours have brung him up luvly

Blu · 26/11/2007 16:46

Call the fire brigade as soon as he sets fire to something, and complain to the council.

TheStepfordChav · 26/11/2007 16:50

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to burn tyres etc. & pollute like that. There are bylaws on bonfires. He sounds - devastatingly attractive

Freckle · 26/11/2007 17:08

Who owns the track? Is it just for the use of his parents?

Contact environmental health and find out what byelaws there might be regarding burning of tyres, etc.

Bouncingturtle · 26/11/2007 17:12

He is breaking the law - report him to the Environmental Health and to the Environment Agency.
Absolutely disgusting behaviour - you shouldn't have to put up with it.
Make sure you keep a record of all of these incidents - it will help with any prosecution. It is most definitely illegal to dispose of tyres and other wastes which could become hazardous in such a fashion.

worzsel · 26/11/2007 17:13

I think the track is owned and shared by several families, they all have garages on it and its got a locked gate. I am sure he's well within his right to use it but his actions are polluting the whole street

He does seem like a horrible little shit actually.

I might pack df off round there tonight to have a word with his parents and if that doesn work i shall think about calling the fire bridage. it was so bad on Saturday that i couldnt see my other neighbours house which is 40 meters or so away, he's turnig what little daylight we have in to night !

He doesn't live there though, he lives in a flat about a mile away, i told his to go and piss off his own neighbours.. he wasnt very pleased.

Bouncingturtle · 26/11/2007 17:17

Makes no difference if he lives there or not - he is still illegally disposing of rubbish and causing a nuisance. Hope your df gets something out of his parents.

jofeb04 · 26/11/2007 17:17

Worzel,
I think that black smoke is illegal, as it burning tyres etc (environmental people would help you more!).

Freckle · 26/11/2007 17:18

I suspect that each family only has the right to pass over the track, though, in order to access their garage. Sounds like he's parking his cars there in order to work on them.

Could you contact the other families and explain what's happening (if they aren't already aware) and they could then insist that he doesn't use the track as he isn't (a) an owner of the track or (b) a resident accessing his garage.

Blu · 26/11/2007 17:20

The fire brigade always take fires in public places seriously.
Especially if it is so close to your fence.

worzsel · 26/11/2007 17:26

really ? i thought we'd be told off for wasting their time.

If that is the case i will ring them next time, Its not only the worry of it damaging my fence, i know burning some plastics and foam etc gives of poisonous smoke, there are loads of kids in this street and i dont really want be be breathing it in myself

Blu · 26/11/2007 17:33

If it's actually burning at the time, call them.
Or call thier non-emeergency number in the morning and explain the problem and ask if i is legal to burn stuff in back lanes - and tell them where it is happening. They may tell you to call them out if there is a fire again.

It sounds very dangerous - tyres next to a wrecked car - full of oil and grease etc! I wouldn't like it.

talktothebees · 26/11/2007 17:34

definitely report him to the environment agency, if he's working on cars he may require a waste licence and proper facilities eg for disposing of oil. They'd check if he was potentially polluting groundwater and other gubbins I can't remember just now

And I love the idea of phoning the fire brigade (not 999 obviously) they would give him a serious talking to. (praying they send a lady firefighter!!!)

nametaken · 26/11/2007 17:34

Bless, his mother must be sooooooooooooo proud of him.

Calling the fire brigade is excellent advice, I wouldn't have thought of that one but it is the logical conclusion.

If he's working on cars from those premisis, I presume he's paying business rates, right? If he's working on them to make money. OTOH if it's a hobby not much you can do.

I sympathise as a fellow night shift worker.

FuriousGeorge · 26/11/2007 21:53

Deffo call the Fire Brigade. My couisins patrner is a farmer & was burning some old bales out in the fields a long way from asnywhere & someone called the fire brigade & the police.Burning tyres is definately an environmental hazard & strictly forbidden,so ring the council too.

He sounds a complete arse.
