Neighbour (friendly but don’t go for a pint or anything)who is a builder has done some work for us and it has come in a little cheaper than we expected. The total is £3950 - would you give him £4000? We are disagreeing here so thought would settle it this way!

Yes!

Shirleyphallus · 21/07/2021 21:02

If you’re paying with a suitcase of cash then yes

If it’s a normal bank transfer then no, pay him the right amount

If he’s done a good job get him some beers or something to say thanks

Notimeforaname · 21/07/2021 21:03

Of course

Aprilx · 21/07/2021 21:04

You haven’t said which you think and therefore what way round the YABU and YANBU are?

I assume if your neighbour was your lawyer or accountant you would be rounding up by £50, so I would see no reason to here either.

Zarene · 21/07/2021 21:05

What Shirley said!

If you mean it as a proper tip then £50 is nothing on that bill. If you mean it as a gesture of thanks then beers or something is far more thoughtful and less awkward.

Aprilx · 21/07/2021 21:05
  • wouldn’t be rounding up
goldface · 21/07/2021 21:05

Sorry! I am yes and stingy boyfriend is no!

Yeah I would

ScottishNewbie · 21/07/2021 21:19

No tip. You're paying for the cost of the service. This tipping business is getting WAY out of hand.

iluvalfredo · 21/07/2021 21:19

I would round it up yeah.

19lottie82 · 21/07/2021 21:21

It depends, I’d there was a few other guys that he employed doing a lot of heavy lifting, and they did a good job, I’d give them £10 or £20 each to get them selves a pint.

If it was just the one guy who did all the work, and got all the cash, then no, I wouldn’t give a tip.

Seesawmummadaw · 21/07/2021 21:21

£50 is tight imo

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/07/2021 21:25

Nope I’m a tipper but wouldn’t round it up

Although my roofer today did actually ask for £20 off the cost to buy some cigs rather than going home for his forgotten wallet

He sealed the side of my bay that wasn’t in the quote so I paid the full amount. It wasn’t a tip though more like extra service

Do we need to start tipping car and house buying now? Frightening thought

yellowsofa · 21/07/2021 21:25

I'd give him £200 as a tip and a case of beer.
No doubt he's saved you quite a bit.

BackforGood · 21/07/2021 21:37

No, I wouldn't.

When someone is self employed or runs a small business, they set their own prices. Pay the man what is on the bill and book keepers / accountants / tax man will all be happy.

If you separately want to bung some used notes in an envelope to 'have a drink on us' do it separately. But I still feel anyone who sets their own prices, sets them with the profit level they are happy with, within the context of being competitive.

Spanielstail · 21/07/2021 22:06

I hate tipping even in restaurants. I hate the idea that I'm obliged to spend more than the cost. However I'm the first there with thank yous. I bought our builders beers recently as they went above and beyond. I do too in a restaurant for excellent service. I Give the post lady and milkman a little Christmas gift.

If he's gone above and beyond give him a small seperate gift.

Shirleyphallus · 22/07/2021 08:02

Tipping your builder £200 is absolutely nuts
