To not know where to turn about vaccine fears?

I've started a new job in the NHS, I'm patient facing and there is pressure being put on for me to get the covid vaccine as soon as possible.

My fears are that I have PCOS and have always struggled with my periods and my cycles used to be 100+ days. Since having a baby a few years ago I have a 29 day cycle and I don't want to mess with this?

I'm scared about the vaccine making me infertile? Or having long term impacts on my reproductive health? It's scary enough with PCOS and I definitely want another child.

I'm overall just a bit skeptical as a 26 year old woman who wants more kids and has PCOS to get a vaccine without long term studies for a virus id likely only be mildly ill from?

I can't say this at work but I feel really anxious over it

@Ellpellwood meant to say
And I'm not shielding (or advised to be) although I am careful especially as DH is a dr working with CV patients

@BoPeeple The fertility stories started before the period disruption was reported.

And, it's curious (and I do mean curious, as in interesting, not sarcastically) that the period disruption is reported for both types of vaccine - the viral vector and the mRNA, which have very different methods of how they work in the body. Period disruption is also a reported symptom of covid.

Period disruption is reported as a side effect of most adult vaccines. Probably part of the reason it's not raising enormous red flags. From a biological point of view, it makes perfect sense when the immune system is being worked.

JanetPondersley · 22/07/2021 16:06

@gwenneh Ah, I didn't know that

SmokeyDevil · 22/07/2021 16:39

@WaxedNotVaxed

The thing is the research that's out there isn't going to show the long term affects, they just aren't going to be known yet. It seems such a gamble for women of child bearing age to be expected to get the vaccine without this.
Your argument is that there is no long term research on if the covid vaccine affects fertility. There has been research and so far, they've found it hasn't.

I'm not sure what the long term affects are for catching covid though? If you caught covid, and then got long covid, that could affect you quite badly. Some people have become disabled because of it. So there are potentially bad sides to not getting the vaccine and then catching covid.

Toomanyradishes · 22/07/2021 16:46

I have PCOS and ironically my periods have been more regular than they ever have been in my life since having the vaccine (phizer)

Two things
I second speaking to your gp or reading literature on this.
If ypu arent patient facing why does your team even need to know ypur vaccination status?

DismantledKing · 22/07/2021 17:53

True

To not know where to turn about vaccine fears?
WaxedNotVaxed · 23/07/2021 19:13

This wasn't intended to be an anti vax thread, it's just not something I felt comfortable expressing my fears about at work as anyone I know has been very vocal about being pro vaccine. I have obviously read the official guidance but I can be a bit skeptical sometimes about trusting the powers that be. Anyway, I had the vaccine today. So thank you for the reassurance.

@WaxedNotVaxed you are doing MN wrong. You are being reasonable now and providing closure😱
😂
Hope you are feeling better about it all and someone professional reassured you

@WeatheringStorms22

It’s funny how no one worries about getting the flu jab and their fertility isn’t it?!

Not really, seeing as there aren't usually hoardes of young adult women experiencing worrying changes to their cycle after having the flu jab Hmm

It's well known that the flu jab CAN cause delayed periods. So can the HPV one.

Why did you have the vaccine? Because you thought it out and decided it was the best option? or peer pressure?
CarrotsAreYummy · 23/07/2021 22:04

OP YADNBU!
I am a nurse with the NHS and I do NOT want Covid vaccine for similar reasons to you. I am prepared to change careers if the vaccine becomes mandatory for me and so are many of my colleagues.
I suggest that vaccinated people who believe YABU should put their money where their mouths are and change careers to become frontline NHS/care workers if not employed in these roles already, if they feel thst strongly about it.

@surf100

Strange isn't it how I've reached a very senior nurse level with lack of scientific knowledge, how I was being clapped for as a "hero" on Thursday evenings, how my countless hours of ongoing, unpaid overtime were readily received, how my years of dedication suddenly count for nothing now that I draw a line by making my needs my priority, but hey-ho. I guess the NHS will be overwhelmed by the influx of vaxxed people desperate to replace the likes if me and my colleagues when we swap to office jobs.

unfortunately people manage to creep into positions of some power for too frequently, doesn't make it right or safe.

Really? Because nationwide the majority of NHS staff have taken up the vaccine, in my local Trust the take-up rate is over 90% and all of my former colleagues (used to work in the NHS) are very vocal on various social media platforms about the importance of having your covid vaccine as well as vaccination in general.

Wait it out 6 months and everyone will start realising that you can't vacinnate effectively against a mutating virus. This isn't small pox. The flu vacinne doesn't work death rates have gone up not down since we started using it. Why would the covid vacinne be any different. They are not even trying to pretend anymore that having the vacinne stops you getting or passing on Covid. This is big pharma at its worst.

Kittyswhiskers · 24/07/2021 08:38

Are you insane? The flu jab doesn’t work for everyone. It provides 40-60% protection.

‘ For example, during 2019-2020, flu vaccination prevented an estimated 7.5 million influenza illnesses, 3.7 million influenza-associated medical visits, 105,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations, and 6,300 influenza-associated deaths.’

From the CDC.

Check your facts before posting anti vax conspiracy shit 🙄

lockdownbabyx · 24/07/2021 09:56

As always, the "anti vaxxer" label gets thrown around as soon as someone has a different opinion. I'm in no way an anti vaxxer, in fact I had my whooping cough vaccine yesterday and I will be getting my COVID jab when I feel comfortable to do so.

foxandbee · 24/07/2021 10:01

"They" never did pretend this. "They" clearly set out it reduced the chances.

Surf100 · 24/07/2021 10:03

seems mumsnet are anti vax too!
