To ask which branded backpacks are waterproof?

My son has Adidas and it’s a canvas material so when it rains everything in his bag gets soaked.

He loves Adidas, hype, Nike etc but can’t really tell online if the bags are waterproof and doesn’t often mention it. Has anyone got a backpack with a link to it, that’s waterproof?

I have one of these, they come in all sorts of designs are really hard wearing and completely waterproof.

We have under armour one

gogohm · 21/07/2021 16:09

Carrier bag inside works the best

But shopped around and got it cheap

Hankunamatata · 21/07/2021 16:15

Ds also tends to use a waterproof rucksack liner in black

ToastandPeanutButter · 21/07/2021 16:21

@Hankunamatata can you tell me what the rucksack liner is please?

We tried carrier bag, but my son is useless and it just used to get shoved to the bottom of the bag!

Iloveitall · 21/07/2021 16:30

I’d be interested in the rucksack liner too. Off for a google. Thanks for the links. I’m off to google them too.

Most backpacks aren't waterproof as the zips will let the water in. You're better off buying a liner to go either inside or over the top of your back (or both).

Brainwave89 · 21/07/2021 16:32

I cycle and walk a lot. My favourite is the German brand Ortilieb. From experience keeps everything dry under the most extreme conditions.

Iloveitall · 21/07/2021 16:38

To be honest it doesn’t need to be completely waterproof but the canvas type one he has at the moment makes his books and pencil case dripping wet in the pouring rain. Just want something that will resist the water a bit.

@ToastandPeanutButter if you Google rucksack liner. The ones for day bags tend to be smaller. Always used them when hiking as no rucksack is totally waterproof

TwoLeftElbows · 21/07/2021 16:45

In our budget, a carrier bag inside to stick over if it's pouring. Otherwise you need one with a flap rather than a zip really, and they are so much more faff to open that the cure is worse than the disease.

Or an umbrella, but according to my lad, ungghhh muuuuum that's ridiculous.

OneTC · 21/07/2021 16:48

Use a dry bag inside

ToastandPeanutButter · 21/07/2021 16:49

@Hankunamatata Didn't even know they existed, thank you!

OneTC · 21/07/2021 16:50

I find that waterproof and backpack are 2 fairly incompatible qualities. I know they exist but they've got shortcomings mainly

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 21/07/2021 16:52

the rolltop ones are supposed to be miles better, but I CBA with the faff of buckle then roll then zip. I think if I cycled miles I would have to get over it.

Hm2020 · 21/07/2021 20:15

Not branded but m&s school backpacks say water repellent

ChristmasCurry · 21/07/2021 20:22

Waterproof drybags are the best way - they come in different colours and sizes and make it simple to keep your gear organized inside the rucksack.

Winterwoollies · 21/07/2021 20:26

OP, I love this. It’s such a wonderful mum question. Assuming you’re mum and not dad. It reminds me of the awesome mum with the head torch in Hollister. 😂🥰

Anyway, may I recommend Fjalraven or Herschel. I have both. They’re cool AF and properly made.

Wolfcub · 21/07/2021 20:29

North face. After the first year of non-waterproof backpack at high school I bought him one and it was £50 well spent. It's done two years and will start its third in September. He fills it with a tonne of stuff and it's still in really good condition

therocinante · 21/07/2021 22:07

Interesting that people say their Fjallraven Kanken backpacks are waterproof - mine doesn't seem to be (although I live in Manchester where the rain is possessed by Poseidon himself so...).

They're very very well-made though. Practically unbreakable.

OneTC · 22/07/2021 09:41

They're not waterproof

Water resistant, treated with a dwr but they're not waterproof and not intended to be

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 22/07/2021 09:43

Everyone in this house (adults and children) have zipped Fjallraven backpacks. They are £130 each but completely waterproof.

OneTC · 22/07/2021 09:46

They are not waterproof.

They are not designed to be waterproof

They are resistant for sure but about a million miles away from waterproof

OneTC · 22/07/2021 09:49

I take that back they brought out a waterproof one in 2019 sorry
