To have chosen not to send him

Sponsored walk today for year 7 at school. 4 hours duration between 10-2. 30 degrees. They sent an email out last night saying lots of the walk is in the open but they would also be stopping for plenty of shaded rests.

He was getting texts today from friends saying they were 'dying' 😄

I chose to keep ds at home.
My mum thinks I should have sent him.

Who is being unreasonable?

Teacher here - unreasonable? not you.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 20/07/2021 15:43

Definitely not unreasonable. 10-2 the hottest time of the day. It’s too hot for me to sit outside working under the shade so to walk for 4 hours is not very sensible.

caringcarer · 20/07/2021 16:39

Absolute madness for this teacher to have arranged this long walk in the hottest part of the day. Asking for trouble. YAB perfectly R keeping your child home. What is wrong with teaching until the bell. Kids have 6 weeks home soon. My son's special secondary school had 3 full days of activities this week despite being behind with the GCSE and BTec work for the year 10 kids.

User5827372728 · 20/07/2021 16:44

I wouldn’t have kept him home but sent him in and expected school to provide a more suitable task for him for the day

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/07/2021 18:36

Yanbu

I’m surprised they were allowed their phones during the school day though!

My son’s class did this one year, on the day my son refused to do it and told them so. I think he was only 11.

AnneLovesGilbert · 20/07/2021 18:43

I nearly died walking to the post office earlier. YANBU.

tarapinn · 20/07/2021 18:50

Gertrude - they don't normally have phones, in fact the school is v strict on this. But they were allowed them on the walk

JoborPlay · 20/07/2021 18:51

I'm surprised it was allowed to go ahead. YANBU.

swampytiggaa · 20/07/2021 18:54

I keep mine off for sports day if it’s hot so you are DNBU.

Last time one of mine did sports day he was off for 3 days afterwards with severe sunburn. No shade for them to sit in.

GreyhoundG1rl · 20/07/2021 18:59

Ridiculous thing to do in 30° heat.

RubyGoat · 20/07/2021 19:06

Ridiculous idea. Half of them will have sunburn from it, no doubt, & the school will blame the parents for not providing adequate sunscreen.

Billandben444 · 20/07/2021 19:32

My grandson played rugby for 2hrs Sunday (mad, I know) and was ill all day yesterday, vomiting and diarrhoea. What is wrong with the school?

tarapinn · 20/07/2021 20:44

Thanks all. I'm so glad I kept him off. We've had a lovely day at home and sun burn either! (Or heatstroke!)

I spent about an hour doing some gentle work in a field with horses yesterday. Felt terrible after, couldn't cool down and felt my heart was racing. I'd be asking to see the risk assessment for this and letting the Head know why my child wasn't taking part. Dangerous.

Nohomemadecandles · 20/07/2021 20:50

Batshit school idea

I don't blame you for keeping him off. Sounds like torture

Candyapple49 · 20/07/2021 20:51

My school did a similar walk a few years ago and as a form tutor I had to go . It was a bonkers idea . I was going to take my dog , but left her at home as it was unfair on her as it was so hot .... yet I had to take 30 kids !!! I felt so ill by the end of the day . You did the right thing !

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 20/07/2021 20:52

Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Australian kids wouldn't do much for about 7 months of the year!

If they had sunscreen/hats on,.plenty of water and rest breaks they'd be fine!

DroopyClematis · 20/07/2021 21:26

I'm just wondering what some posters do on holiday in Cyprus, Greece and southern Spain.
Probably stay in their hotel rooms all day, every day.

Nobody is saying that they shouldn't do any physical activity, just maybe make sure it is appropriate to the weather conditions.

I used to live in Spain and my DD (and every other child) did PE and sports ... just not during the hottest part of the day.

At my DDs school PE was only scheduled for thr first periods of the day (8.45-10.30) or the afternoon (3-5pm) . The only exceptions were for classes/lunchtime extracurriculars that happened indoors. Additionally the sports courts were all built with the heat in mind (plenty of shade, access to water etc)

FangsForTheMemory · 20/07/2021 22:17

@IBelieveInAThingCalledScience In Spain, Portugal and Italy they also have a long break in the middle of the day when they stay in the shade!

ChocolateFlamingo · 20/07/2021 22:54

Pffft! I sweat my tits off just walking out my front door to my car!!Grin
I wouldn't have sent my DC in either so YANBU

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 20/07/2021 23:10

I was born and raised in Portugal and then moved to Australia where I lived for over a decade.

School aged children do not have a mid day break. That's just not true.

They are well educated about protecting their skin, staying hydrated and being sun smart.

Bearing in mind that temperatures in both countries can easily reach the 40 degrees in the summer, people still get on with their normal life and children play outside and engage in sports.

I don't holiday in these temperatures. I prefer to go late or early in the season when temperatures are low 20s. So I can enjoy doing stuff.
