I just read about this and am so upset Sad I don't understand how humans can be so damn cruel, it makes me sick to my stomach.

Good on Animal Aid and the BBC for exposing this.

ROR is huge. The situation for ex racers is a hundred times better than it was.

If racehorses or any horse is chronically lame and in pain then yes it needs to be pts

The issue here is the inhuman treatment of the animals at the slaughterhouse, but then people are happy to have kosher or halal butchery in this country so (shrug)

RealBecca · 20/07/2021 14:57

@bluewanda fine, in response to your response to pp (because apparently i can't just add an opinion, i have to reply to you directly, do you feel sad enough to be vegan? Because if not then come down off your high horse. Pun intended.

Don’t you think most of the people against this sort of slaughter of horses are also against halal/kosher butchery?

Yes, hopefully. No documentary on that though.
Soubriquet · 20/07/2021 14:59

Just one of the many reasons I don’t support horse (or dog) racing

I'm vegetarian but not vegan - I would like to be vegan and have tried several times, but admit I struggled and caved in. I'm still allowed to feel for the disgusting way these horses are treated though.

And why say you had RTFT when you clearly hadn't? Confused

I used to love a day at the races, and we have 5 courses within about 40 miles so I went often, but when I found out how much cruelty is involved in the "sport", I stopped going and stopped betting.

I didn't watch Panorama, because I knew it would depress and enrage me.

I'd love to have a retired racehorse or two to look after, but not only do I not have the room, I wouldn't have a clue how to look after a horse. There's a racing yard a few hundred yards from my house, and they roadwork the horses near where I live. They are such beautiful creatures, it breaks my heart to think of how they suffer.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 15:08

I love horses and have owned many. I found the slaughterhouse scenes almost impossible to watch. But I also enjoy watching racing and know many people in involved in the sport who love and respect their horses.

Trouble is, if a racing yard sells an ex racer to an approved home, then the person who buys it sells it on, they never know where its going to end up

Bringbackguitarsolos · 20/07/2021 15:08

@ChainJane

Not particularly disturbed by it to be honest, the animals are at the end of their lives so any distress caused is only very temporary. I was more concerned by the fact that Ireland sends so many horses to England to be euthanised, it's a bit like the British sending their rubbish to the far east because they don't want to deal with the problem.

The important thing to remember is that racehorses have fantastic lives and are looked after much better than livestock destined for human consumption is.

No worries, when you’re 80 how about someone will come along and shoot you. You’re getting towards the end of your life and have had a good one. The distress will be temporary too you won’t feel a thing.

They don't routinely suffer, but yes, horses are amazing creatures and it's horrible to think of them suffering
Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 15:09

@bluewanda
All horse pts are shot.

It’s worse than that. It’s being forced to watch someone else shot and die, them be short yourself. Plenty of these horses aren’t even at the equivalent of 80. They’re much younger.

bluewanda · 20/07/2021 15:11

@Bryonyshcmyony yes, but as it says in the article, they shouldn't be transported hundreds of miles, and they shouldn't see other horses shot in front of them as it obviously causes huge distress.

@bluewanda what do you think ive missed?!!

Youre allowed to feel what you want but i think its a bit much to create a thread to lament about animal welfare when you yourself partake in anomal suffering because you cant make veganism work. I can so what do you struggle with and need help with?

Yes I totally agree with you.

Not true at all.
Lethal injections are done for horses they just aren’t that popular due to how long they take due to the size of the animals

bluewanda · 20/07/2021 15:13

@RealBecca it was just an issue of willpower really (mainly around cheese!) but you're right, I could and should do better.

OP posts:
Thatnameistaken · 20/07/2021 15:13

I lived close to two racing yards before they were shut down due to major animal welfare issues. Racehorses do not always have a glorious life wading through clover, they are an expendable commodity, they are running machines bred to win money for people who couldn't give a shit about how well looked after they are as long as they get the results.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 15:13

Yes and they are a truly horrible way for a horse to die.

TheCrowening · 20/07/2021 15:29

[quote Bryonyshcmyony]@bluewanda

They can be given a lethal injection but it’s riskier and potentially more distressing.

The issue here is the abattoir and their practices, and that it shouldn’t be legal to transport horses to slaughter. Many of the horses shown weren’t racehorses and those that were are unlikely to have come straight from racing. The problem is many people take on thoroughbreds without having the knowledge, skills or means to properly care for them, and then there’s no way of knowing where they’ll end up.

Ban transporting horses for slaughter by all means. If they need to be euthanised it should be done at home. I think most people involved in racing would entirely support and agree with that.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 15:35

Maybe a documentary on Appleby Horse Fair and the horse abuse that goes on there, or the horses routinely abandoned often tethered to the side of the road?

I know this is whataboutery but honestly some industries are an easy target.

Shipping horses a long way to slaughterhouses could easily be made illegal and I'm not sure why it isn't.
