To ask what the best double buggies are?

We’re planning on gifting a family member a double pram - one toddler 3 years old and a baby.

She needs something that isn’t a faff to fold up/down, not sure if that’s a tall order for a double pram. Also something not to heavy and cumbersome.

Looking at all the different models and it’s not easy to choose. Any recommendations?

Does the 3YO really need to be in a buggy?

Out n about nipper double. The one with 3 wheels.

Mumdiva99 · 20/07/2021 07:05

I'd like one that goes from 2 to 1. So there is life after the 3 year old stops using it.

Also....I would look for a second hand buggy as she might not use it for that long.

My favourite was the Phil and Ted's buggy. Narrow to go through doors, a dream to push.

If the 3 year old is more wilful.....then a side by side is easier. They are usually easier to fold down too.

I liked the bugaboo but it a right pain to fold up. How young a baby? I agree about 2nd hand. As the toddler will start walking places soon enough. Then she'll only need one seat.

Loved my out n about double. So easy to fold and light to push

CrabbyCat · 20/07/2021 07:13

What sort of places will she be using it?

We have a Baby jogger CityMini double. It's incredibly easy to fold. It's got bigger seats than the out n about nipper double mentioned above so your family member could still get loads of use out of it even with a 3 year old (my tall 6 year old will still sit in it sometimes).

It's easy to steer and push / bump up kerbs, the downside is the width. It's wheelchair width so you can get it through doors ok, but narrow shops just aren't an option.

Britax agile / baby jogger do good doubles that lie flat for newborns or have a carry cot attachment but I second the advise about getting second hand

A 3 wheeler is best. I had a Phil and Ted's but that was ten years ago now. Used it until my eldest started school.

CrumbleLady · 20/07/2021 07:15

Phil & Teds - easier to push with a toddler walking alongside than a side-by-side one.

But I’d question whether they really need a double with that age gap? A sling/buggy board/single pushchair combination might work better

Fizbosshoes · 20/07/2021 07:22

I also had a phil and Ted's (years ago) that I got off ebay. It was great and I used as single or double but not that light.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 20/07/2021 07:22

We love our Phil and Ted's, still easily useable when the 3 year old moves out, you just Clip off the bottom seat. It is pretty heavy though, and big-takes up a lot of room in the boot. Tough, rugged and great for country walks.

Hercisback · 20/07/2021 07:25

Do they really need a double? I had the same age gap and never used one. Buggy board on a single was enough and 3yo walked/scooted.

Honestly whatever you buy probably won’t be right, could you not buy it together or gift them the money? It’s really a personal preference, some people hate the tandem buggies (where one child is below), I loved mine because I had to take it on buses and down narrow footpaths. It will also depend on the car seat the baby has as ideally you want one where the car seat also fits on to the frame for the first 6 months (means you can move the baby about without waking them up). With that age gap I would get one with a built in buggy-board, like the i candy lime or i candy orange, which would allow the older child to stand. But I do think it is best to speak to the mum and dad about this.
