To report neighbour for this?

AIBU to report my neighbour for seemingly setting up a taxi firm from their house? Is this even allowed?

@Skittles12345

No not lots lined up on the street, but they've converted the front garden to a drive when there is no dropped curb to allow for this so it should be a drive way and the way they park impacts on people using the path by them not fitting on the drive properly.
Ok, so you could ask them (politely), not to obscure the path?
Viviennemary · 20/07/2021 11:03

I would report them if it's disturbing you. Its a parking issue. Are they allowed to make such alerations to a council property.

iwilldoitsoon · 20/07/2021 11:08

OP you need to be much clearer about what is going on. The lack of dropped curb is irrelevant in terms of you reporting someone for illegally running a business. What do you think they are doing is illegal? Once you clarify that maybe people can advise you better?

MaMelon · 20/07/2021 11:10

If it’s a single car taxi firm there’s nothing you can do providing they’re properly registered, but that doesn’t sound like the case here. Yep, I’d report - it’s a residential street with people trying to use it for normal residential purposes. They can’t do that as this taxi firm is currently operating.

WettyHainthrop · 20/07/2021 11:12

I’ve never heard of something so appalling in the whole of my life.

Yes, I would report this to planning.

If it was one mini cab, obviously not.

saraclara · 20/07/2021 11:27

Is there are several cabs with taxi signs on, and they're blocking the pavement, then yes, contracting the council is probably reasonable. I thought you meant he just had his own taxi, and it was a one man business, like my neighbour.

Skittles12345 · 20/07/2021 11:51

I've looked on the planning for the council and there is no application and the company on the side of the cars isn't registered to an address even in the same town.

So the business is not running from home then? The registered address is elsewhere. Please OP, what do you think they are doing illegally? The parking isn't ideal but it doesn't constitute illegal running of a business.

Just ring and report for change of use, if he is allowed they will tell you.
lannistunut · 20/07/2021 11:57

You can just ask if he is allowed, rather than report. It may be allowable, it may not - depending what he is actually DOING.

Skittles12345 · 20/07/2021 11:58

Yes it is being run from home including the phones ringing through to the home. It's not just me, other neighbours have spoken to me about it too.

Jijithecat · 20/07/2021 11:59

OP I think you're getting a hard time for this, but I'd do some background research before I considered reporting it to anyone. Check on your borough council website, there should be a public register of licensed taxi companies. Unlicensed taxis are a huge safeguarding risk.

You can just ring your council and they'll advise.
Streamingbannersofdawn · 20/07/2021 12:04

I have spoken to the council planning department about something similar recently, If the running of their business significantly changes the use of the property the department will come and assess if they should have applied for a change of use.

Call them, they can advise.

A taxi controller operating the phone lines and computer system to allocate jobs or the guy himself getting allocated work on his work based mobile which will have a taxi app such as icabbi? These are 2 very different situations and you need to be clear about what is happening.

Bluntness100 · 20/07/2021 12:36

Honestly it’s sod how many folks curtain twitch on their neighbours itching to report them,

Go for it op, you’ll not be happy till you have.

Skittles12345 · 20/07/2021 12:37

The partner is operating the phone lines, he and others are doing the driving.
The company is registered at companies house but I can't see anything for the business name or reg number on the council site.
Is it possible to be registered on companies house and not have a license?!

OP posts:
mygood · 20/07/2021 12:40

Seriously what is this obsession about reporting people ?
Fair play to them using their initiative and earning a living. Would you rather them on benefits?
How exactly does this affect you? And what would you hope to gain by "reporting" them?

they will most certainly have a radio operators licence. Just let it go and live your own life fgs.

Right, his partner alone isn't running a whole taxi company. It takes several members of staff to man the lines and dispatch jobs to vehicles.

All the drivers and cars have to be licensed, separately.

How do you and your neighbours know so much about why is going on inside someone's house?

warmandtoasty2day · 20/07/2021 12:46

don't report just notify council about the parking and the kerb, the council will pursue it if necessary.

Skittles12345 · 20/07/2021 12:49

@iwilldoitsoon they've not exactly been quiet to some of the neighbours about what they are doing. Some are classed as friends I guess. But everyone is getting fed up with all the coming and going and the parking.

OP posts:
mygood · 20/07/2021 12:50

life is too short for shit like this. Instead of curtain twitching at the coming and going and the parking go find joy in something

It makes no sense though. If the cars are licensed in another area then it's bad practice for them all to travel back to this one house to sit. Dead miles are a taxi drivers nightmare. Nobody does it on purpose. Why are they not remaining in area and using a rank or even sitting marked on the system in an area they are likely to get work?

This situation makes no sense at all. I suspect someone has some details mixed up.
