DP's work mate being unreasonable?

DP is self employed and works with his mate. Both work together on a building site. DP complained of feeling ill last week (Wednesday) so had Thursday off work. We put it down to heatstroke as he'd caught the sun quite badly (doesn't put suncream on and definitely doesn't drink enough during the day 🙄). Anyway, he had an early night Thursday and said he felt better the next morning so went back into work, all fine. Over the weekend he felt fine but last night complained of feeling really achy and said he couldn't taste or smell anything. He also complained of finding it hard to breath (don't think the heat is particularly helping). He's taken the day off work today and gone and done a covid test. Been told it can take up to 72 hours to get the results back so he will need to isolate until he hears back (hopefully it's nothing).

Work mate has seen his arse because their not allowed on the site alone due to health and safety regulations. Saids he won't be able to find anyone else at such short notice to go into work with him. He's made DP feel really guilty and even said he won't be isolating even if DP does test positive. I understand it's a huge inconvenience, we all need money to live at the end of the day but surely he's being unreasonable? Given the choice I'm sure DP would rather be well and in work 🙄

Yes, he's BU.

To be honest, I'd be annoyed at him for not bothering to take precautions to keep himself well whilst on the job.
He's a grown man, and he can't put on any sun screen? And won't drink water during the day? Because of those idiotic actions, he's already had time off with sun stroke.

He can't help the covid situation, and he is absolutely right to get the test. The results are coming back really quick now so you really should know by tonight or tomorrow morning. So the workmates is behaving very badly, and if he is saying he won't isolate and your husband gets a positive result then your husband needs to tell the person who hired them for the job.

But.. I can understand the mate's anger as this is more time off, and the first time was totally avoidable with simple actions of sunscreen/drinking water/put a skip cap on if he doesn't need a hard hat.

@Fiddliestofsticks sorry, I don't think I explained myself very well there. We thought it was heatstroke at the time but we now think it might be covid, especially as he now can't taste or smell anything and saids he's finding it difficult to breath. He took Thursday off but felt better the following morning, otherwise he would have taken the test sooner.

Don't get me started on the sun cream and water though. Totally agree he's a fully grown man and should be able to do those things, I've told him that time and time again. In all fairness to him though, they've worked together for nearly two years and this is the first time DP's taken any time off.

If he couldn't taste or smell likely it could be covid or maybe it could be just a cold. But you won't know until you get results. He's done the right thing!

Workmate is being unreasonable but at the same time I get the stress about it. Clearly your dp and his workmate won't earn any money being off sick or isolating. He's probably worried about getting by! Money worried being out this kind of thing in people.

Hopefully results won't take 72 hours. We had results back within 11 hours recently.

Hope he feels better soon!

Sandinmyknickers · 19/07/2021 17:52

Workmate is being unreasonable yes, but I can empathise that he is worried about money.

I think the only thing your DP is maybe unreasonable about is that he didn't think to do a test when he was actually ill and took the Thursday off as if negative result, this could have been sorted by now. But hindsight is 20/20, so it's not massively his fault

Sandinmyknickers · 19/07/2021 17:52

Also I hope he is negative and feels better soo

If he is finding it difficult to breathe then call NHS 111 he can get assessed via video by a Dr who can prescribe steroids to help.
Having had covid and difficulties breathing it was this action early on which kept me out of a hospital stay!

To be honest, I'd be annoyed at him for not bothering to take precautions to keep himself well whilst on the job.

You can follow all of the precautions and still get covid, heat stroke or any number of illnesses.

He is being completely unreasonable. I hope it was just the initial worry of loosing money and he’ll apologise later on.
