Please can you offer any tips? Smile

after a cancer scare and severe depression in 2020, I am around 60lbs higher than I need to be to be healthy. I am no longer depressed and my health has improved, now I just need to shift this weight!

If you’ve successfully lost this much weight (or more!) and kept it off - please can I ask you to share any tips which you felt made a difference?

Thank you! Flowers

I lost over 4 stone a few years ago going from a size 14 to an 8 I am now a large 10 but content with it I’ll be honest I did it on slim fast and with lots of walking I did it in 4 months it became my obsession I now eat a lot healthier I banned crisps from my house I cannot be trusted with them I eat extremely low carb and hardly any dairy.

ohthatbloodycat · 19/07/2021 00:47

I'm doing Exante. It's a very low calorie diet (with meal replacement products). It's going very well for me so far. Mostly I'm just happy to be back in control and doing something about my weight! following years of procrastination

MajorNeville · 19/07/2021 00:53

I'm doing Exante too, I'm 30lb down so far with another 38lb to go. I'll definitely do it as I'm so comfortable in this diet.

I’ve gone from 13 to 9 stone but it’s taken me over 3 years. 2018-2019 I lost 2.5 stone through going to weight watchers. My weight loss plateaued after that and I didn’t lose anything last year. That’s not to say WW wasn’t good, like I said it helped me initially but I do feel like it’s ideally suited for those who are very overweight (like I was) and once I’d lost a bit it became more difficult. WW also allow you to eat however much fruit you want and I don’t think that helped because I was eating loads.

I also took up running 2 years ago, although this can help with weight loss IME it’s 80% down to diet.

I lost the rest this year, I did six pack revolution which has really changed the way I think about food, 75 days of clean eating and workouts. And I was rarely hungry which is the main thing!

The process probably would have been quicker but I started losing weight when my youngest was a newborn and since then I’ve dealt with breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, marriage breakdown, my dad getting ill and dying and obviously the pandemic so I’ve had to shelve the dieting at times.

I did. I bought a rowing machine and started rowing every day. (Concept2) The minimum I would row was 15 min. After awhile I was rowing 30 min a day and longer on weekends. I started to lose weight and really felt a lot better with the daily exercise. I joined a team on the concept 2 website and started to participate in their challenges.

I should say that I did this in the morning, after coffee and before a shower, so it was easy to fit in my day and took out a lot of excuses that I’ve always had about exercise.

After awhile I started to track calories using my fitness pal. Super easy to do and mostly just made me mindful of what I ate and how much. I really didn’t change what I ate, just made choices that fit into my goal.

It took about 2years, but I lost about 60 pounds.

I’ve been off both for about a year now as I did a number on my back. I really want to get back to rowing and will soon. I haven’t gained too much back maybe 5 pounds but that’s even on a heavy day.

Keto. I lost 10.5 stone. It came off quickly, but it would come back on if I hadn’t made keto my lifestyle. (I went on keto originally because I was having chronic, rapid-cycling migraines and the neurologist suggested it as a way of reducing the awful medication. He said I would quickly know if it would work for me, and it did. The weight began to fall off too, so I stuck with it. There have been so many other health benefits and of course, mental health benefits, that I couldn’t possibly look back.

Treaclepie19 · 19/07/2021 13:34

I lost around 40lb on slimming world. Now in the same position again 🙄

lubeybooby · 19/07/2021 13:38

I lost 120lbs

The key is not racing yourself, I only weigh in once a month. It starts faster as your TDEE is higher usually at a higher weight but gradually gets harder as it comes down and honestly, 1/2 a pound can be a lot, you just have to keep doing it and not dishearten yourself so that you CAN just keep doing it. Measure absolutely every part of you as well in cm and don't ever weigh in too often

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/07/2021 13:40

I counted calories. No other faff. Worked perfectly. But I also used it to relearn healthy portions and healthy habits.

DeltaAlphaDelta · 19/07/2021 13:42

Ive lost 4 1/2 stone (60ish pounds) on slimming world. Followed it sensibly, no home made haribo, or mainlining muller lights. Have kept it off for a year so far, and now going for another stone.

Also exercise classes when allowed.

Summertime21 · 19/07/2021 13:44

I've lost 3 st and kept it off for 2 years now with slimming world. Cooking from scratch but learning lots of healthy recipes meant I didn't get bored. Once I started losing I began to walk more as I had more energy

Marguerite2000 · 19/07/2021 13:46

I went from 14 stone 11 pounds to 10 stone 4 pounds, a loss of 63 pounds. I cut back on my portion sizes (bought a smaller plate), cut out most of the obvious crap, and did a lot of exercise, mostly walking and swimming. Unfortunately I regained about 11 pounds in lockdown.

OneHundredTrees · 19/07/2021 13:47

I lost 100lbs 11 years ago! All kept off.

I changed what I ate. Started cooking from scratch, no processed crap, I found healthier alternatives to food I love (homemade curry instead of takeaway, yoghurt and blueberries instead of sugary puddings etc) and I'm mindful of calories and portion sizes. If I have chocolate, it's a square of dark 85% and not a family size bar of Cadburys, if I have cake I'll enjoy a small slice and not have a second/third/may as well finish it.

Eat dinners filled with seasonal veg, protein to keep full and avoid anything fried or greasy. One thing I've stuck to is eating 3 meals a day, which avoids snacking, and drink loads of water throughout the day.

Going from a size 24 to a size 8 has changed my life, best of luck OP. Flowers

Poptart4 · 19/07/2021 15:13

I'm currently using my fitness pal and logging everything I eat. Sticking to 1200 cals a day or less.

One thing I would suggest is learn to appreciate ANY weight loss. I used to be really disappointed if I "only" lost a pound a week. And I would get demotivated and start eating crap and my diet would be ruined.

Every bit of weight loss is good.

Honestly it all adds up. Even half a pound a week adds up over time. Just keep going.

SecretWitch · 19/07/2021 15:19

I used MFP, low carb and combination of strength training and cardio at least 5 times a week.

The best advice I got was “ You cannot out train your fork”.
No matter how much exercise you do it does not cancel out that candy bar and bag of crisps.

DrManhattan · 19/07/2021 15:22

I very unhealthily crash dieted about 5 stones, that was 20 years ago. I never regained it. I just hated being over weight. It's like being invisible and I don't like the snide comments. It feels like the world likes skinny people more ime

Littlepool · 19/07/2021 15:28

Keto diet and intermittent fasting. I would eat normally for 8 hours without exceeding my daily maximum calories, sticking to a keto meal plan then fast for 16. Most of the fast is through the night so you hardly notice. Weight dropped off rapid and once your body adjusts to the new diet and fasting it's relatively easy to stick to. I feel so much more healthy inside and out because of it.

Lifeonashoestring · 19/07/2021 15:38

Lost 60lbs last year. I used my fitbit and app to track everything. I also broke it down into 10lb chunks with a target completion of roughly 2 months every 10 lbs. 1 year = 60lbs lost. I actually did it in 8 months.

To start with I used an online calculator to work out calorie intake to lose 10lbs (aiming to lose 1-2lbs a week assuming a SEDENTARY lifestyle). This was recalculated at the start of every 10lb chunk.

I then stuck this in fitbit and tracked my intake. Learned a lot about portion sizes! On top of this I would force myself to go out for a walk 5/7 days a week. I was never going to do intense cardio and stick to it, but working from home I gained the commute time so I'd hit the streets with a podcast or audiobook in my ears.

The key was consistency (and covid meant there were fewer opportunities to go out and have overindulgent binges). It actually was easier than I thought. And it was always good when you get a badge from fitbit as a NEW!

Dixiechickonhols · 19/07/2021 15:53

70lb lost on SlimmingWorld. 1/3 plate veg. Eating lots of protein. I eat protein yoghurt 0% Greek or skyr or kvarg. Drink Water. 10,000 steps minimum. Limit white carbs. Lifestyle change not quick fix. Still a healthy bmi 2 years later. I was obese before and had been for years.

TellMeHowYouMet · 19/07/2021 16:00

I was over 15 stone at my heaviest. I've been around 10 1/2 stone for years now.

The things that have worked for me is finding an exercise I enjoy (and therefore doing it consistently), breaking the binge-restrict cycle and focusing on modelling eating "normally" to my children.

sheepysheep · 19/07/2021 16:10

LCHF / keto worked really well for me - I was a complete carboholic and I’m a typical endomorph so I put weight on really easily. I lost my excess weight - about 4 stones - in about six months and it’s stayed off now for 5 years. I’m not as strict now but I do a lot of exercise. I feel so much better.

Different things work better for different people eg Ectomorphs seem to do really well on a high carb plant based diet.

I think the most important thing anyone can do is cook real food using real ingredients - plenty of plants (especially green ones) and protein and quality fats and as few things with long shelf lives / wrapped in plastic as possible. It is astonishing that we westerners are so malnourished despite being overweight … trouble is shite food is tasty, quick, easy and cheap.

OlympicProcrastinator · 19/07/2021 16:26

Saxenda worked for me. I couldn’t shift the weight after my last pregnancy and I lost 4 stone pretty quickly on it.

JungleBeats · 19/07/2021 16:58

I lost 6 stone many years ago. I hate faff and don't mind eating simular foods most of the time (hate cooking).

Cut out all potatoes, rice, bread and pasta. Only had one piece of fruit a day/one portion. Cut out crisps, chocolate, cake and sweets.

Breakfast: yogurt, fruit and small amount of nuts.
Lunch: Omelette or veg and hummus + one egg.

Dinner: whatever everyone else was eating but cut the carb out and add extra veg/veg mash.

Tips:
Don't weight yourself
measure yourself instead.

Be prepared - always.

EssexLioness · 19/07/2021 17:28

Weightwatchers, lost 56lbs. Cut out the takeaways and watched my portions. Half plate veg every evening meal. Three meals a day and one afternoon snack of soya yoghurt and fruit. Slightly more relaxed at weekends but still within my points allowance.
