Aibu to think this weather isn't enjoyable for a single parent to a toddler..

Don't mean to be a misery. Attempted trip to park earlier and was utterly melting. Came home, went in garden and both sets of neighbours are having a bbq.. Like a furnace in my garden, coupled with smelling like charcoal. Resigned to go back inside. Sigh.

I live by the beach, when DD was small I would go out very early and take a picnic breakfast and then be home by 11 when we could relax in the shade. She was always sleepy after her morning trip and then we might go to the park after 5. To be fair Dd is nearly 12 and we still do the same thing, out very early, mooch around indoors in the main heat of the day then out in the evening although today's beach trip was paddle boarding and not making sandcastles - too old for that now apparently and playing minecraft instead of watching Barney on repeat.

The best part of being a single parent is you don't have to work to anyone else's timetables. Plenty of other countries have a siesta and go out in the evenings and their children cope just fine.

There are toddlers on the street outside getting hosed by their big sister (on pavement)

MadeOfStarStuff · 18/07/2021 16:26

This weather isn’t nice for lots of people, not just single parents of toddlers

Elune · 18/07/2021 16:33

Paddling pool is a godsend. We have ours filled most days when it's hot like this and DD (2.5) will spend much of the day going in and out, playing with toys, etc. She loves a 'nice picnic' as she calls it too, which is basically just her normal lunch but in the garden on a rug.

I don't really mind barbecue smell that much, aside from it making me jealous I am not having one!

warmfluffytowels · 18/07/2021 16:35

Our neighbours' toddler seems to be having a great time - paddling pool in the shade, food, quiet music.

Yes, the heat can be tough but it's not THAT hot.

TheKeatingFive · 18/07/2021 16:37

Paddling pools are your friend in this situation.

Youdiditanyway · 18/07/2021 16:37

Not really sure where single parent comes into it tbh. Some toddlers can’t hack the heat, others are fine. My 2 year old loves it tbh, it’s 30 degrees here but he’s been enjoying splashing around at the beach yesterday and playing in the garden today 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Nothing you've said is about being a single parent.

You need paddling pool and toys, umbrella to create some shade and sorted

Thehop · 18/07/2021 16:39

Fill a cool bath or paddling pool
With toys. Curtains closed windows open

The weather isn't that enjoyable for someone in a flat with no outside space either. But I love waking up to the good weather (instead of grey and rain) and will go for a walk about 7.30 once it's cooled off a bit and come back to a chilled glass of wine. Life is what you make it.

User5827372728 · 18/07/2021 16:41

We went to local beach 8-11am, home, lunch, some chilled tv time, afternoon in paddling pool under a shade umbrella

girlmama32 · 18/07/2021 16:43

I definitely agree with you. I always make sure we are up and out early when it's supposed to be hot so we aren't melting and are home by the time it heats up.
Paddling pool has been a god send the past couple of days, I got a decent gazebo this year for some shade and DD will just jump in and out as she pleases.
