Sorry for posting here but I wasn't sure which board would get quick views/responses.

Im relatively new to NHS and need some clarification around the banding progression if anyone can help?

3 years on band 3, now at top of band. If I moved to band 4 where do I start and at what salary.

Looking at the chart there's column for 2017/2018, 18/19, 19/20, 20/21

Do I just drop into the first point on 20/21?

I think it depends if they can skill match your experience, if they can then you may be able to go in slightly higher, but not by much. After tax it might only be another £30 a month take home depending on hours of course. I think mine was when I worked it out.

Of course you can gain more every year, but is it frozen for the first 2 years?

You need to use the salary calculator and put your pension in, When I worked it out I would earn another 50p an hour as B4, with a lot more responsibilties which I didnt want to commit to.

Squaddielife · 18/07/2021 13:07

I've been working at B4 level since I started bit paid band 3....typical NHS eh !

My job is changing due to restructure/ re organisation of workload between teams so I dont even know what the job description is yet.

My guess is I'll get a band 4 though. Would that mean doing from top of B3 (21142) to 21892 per the screenshot?

You would normally start at the bottom of the next band up unless your previous band finishes at a higher level than the start of the new band, or unless you can negotiate a higher starting point - but they usually don’t go beyond the second or third point up on the new band for new starts.

I say usually because there are always exceptions.

Tibtab · 18/07/2021 13:15

Normally you would go to bottom of the next band unless you can prove that you have band 4 experience.
I’ve found that the NHS aren’t keen to skip too many spine points.

RubyFowler · 18/07/2021 13:15

Your salary shouldn't drop, I think they will start you at the point you are now.

Stompythedinosaur · 18/07/2021 13:29

If you are already in the NHS and your current salary is higher than the bottom of the new band, you will start your new band at one increment higher than the salary you are currently on.

Squaddielife · 18/07/2021 14:02

Thanks everyone.

Re the bottom of band 4....do i just look at the 2020/2021 column or are the other colums relevant too?

We’re now into 21/22 - do you have the salary scale for this year? That’s the one you’ll need to look at.

YellowBellyCat · 18/07/2021 14:09

If you move up a band you should see a pay rise….so you’d move up to the point just above your current pay.

Alldressedup · 18/07/2021 14:10

@Squaddielife Just look at the 20/21 column. The other columns just show the pay in previous years so aren’t relevant to you. Of course this will be updated once the 21/22 pay award is agreed.

Stompythedinosaur · 18/07/2021 14:12

Agree, just look at the current year's pay. That will give you which increment point you will move to.

Squaddielife · 18/07/2021 14:16

Fantastic Smile thanks everyone

Are you in England? The pay bands haven't been decided there yet as Boris is still deciding how many crumbs he will toss.

The pay bands for Scotland have been sorted now, and the incremental points have been reduced for most pay bands so now there are only two points. I think this reducing the increments was part of the 3 year pay deal so likely to also apply to England.

So the top of band 3 is lower now than the bottom of band 4, which is where you would start, and then remain on that salary for a certain number of years until you could progress to the next pay point.

I've attached a pic of the Scotland bands so you can see what I mean.

Pay in Scotland is higher than in England as we have had higher raises over the last few years while Boris has been running it down ready to sell off to his mates.

My friend was at the top of band 4 then got a B5 job and went to the bottom of that band so only got around £40 extra a month. I was at the bottom of B4 then got promoted to bottom of B5 and got around £200 extra per month. The banding is a fair system to people who have worked there a while
