To say that motorbikes sound bloody awful

I have the windows open as it's so hot and every so often I'll hear one zooming past and my god, the noise, they make the rest of the traffic sound like white noise in comparison.

Am I overly sensitive to noise or do you agree? Confused

It would be nice to have a legal limit on engine noise. I don't mind normal car noise but it comes to something when you have the volume turned up to 100% on a laptop and the only parts of the film you can hear is when they're shouting or something's exploding.

I'd just like to be able to hear it without having to shut my windows and boil (26.4 degrees in my room currently - I'll be up til 1am waiting for it to cool down enough to sleep).

Tacket · 17/07/2021 23:28

@IRanSoFarAway1

OP is your brother's friend making changes for the sake of noise?

I had a friend restore cars as a hobby but she didn't amend them to make a racket.

To make it run better apparently, although one particular 'upgrade' is said to make it louder Envy

I ride a motorcycle and the loud pipes do make other drivers take note so I can see why they work from a safety point of view.

When I was at college, the lecturer would be in the middle of teaching and a car with a loud exhaust would go by, the cars that boy racers drive and the lecturer would stop and say, 'oh girls does that not just make you weak at the knees? How can you resist that? Those boys pay a lot of money for their car to make that sound but wow does it pay off. It's a chick magnet, it's what every woman looks for in a male'. Always made me chuckle Grin
I'm more of the opinion it's probably overcompensation for having a tiny dick. (And the lecturer sounds like a metaphorical only massive one...)
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 17/07/2021 23:42

Yes electric motorbikes are definitely a thing. I love the noise of a good combustion engine in the right setting and I'll miss them.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 17/07/2021 23:45

We have a dual carriageway nearby and the noise of motorbikes drives me mad. Sometimes there's swarms of them as the noise goes on forever, driving up and down.
Dread to think how bad it would be if the windows were open. But my neighbour puts paid to that with all the shit his chimney kicks out.

What's worse is car drivers who play incredibly loud music at 6:30am.

user1471453601 · 17/07/2021 23:55

@Tacket, believe me, she gets plenty of fuss.

She's lovely, but dear god, her bark is ten times worse than the motorbike. High pitched and piercing.

Dustyboots · 17/07/2021 23:57

I hate them too and those cars with very loud exhausts. I wish they could be banned.

Can't wait for all vehicles to become electric. Everywhere will be so much quieter, won't it.

RubyGoat · 17/07/2021 23:59

They are unnecessarily loud. When DD was about 2, still in a buggy, a motorcyclist rode past us once & made her jump. DH called him a bad word... DD evidently heard him. She repeated it, with perfect clarity the next day, when a motorcyclist went past as we were waiting at a crossing. Two old ladies were standing next to us. I wanted a hole to open up in the ground & swallow me. The two ladies thought it was hilarious! DH got told off. A lot. He also laughed... Hmm

goodforyouyoulookhappy · 18/07/2021 00:02

@LegoCaltrops that's funny! Grin

Everley · 18/07/2021 00:06

I hate the noise of them but then my DH (who has a motorbike) pointed out one day that the noise helps to alert other road users that they are there. So I suppose good from a safety point of view and I don’t mind it as much when I am driving now.

Still don’t like it when they are in traffic right outside my living room window and I feel like my face is vibrating!

Notjustanymum · 18/07/2021 05:53

We live close to a road that goes into a tunnel, and the number of cars and motorcycles that use it and feel the need to either rev up or backfire their vehicles in it gives me the rage too, OP, I feel your pain!
Am waiting for electric vehicles to become the norm - roll on 2030, when new petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned in the UK...

cakeseeker · 18/07/2021 06:08

Yes and surely they all get debilitating tinnitus?

drpet49 · 18/07/2021 06:20

I hate motorbikes

But it doesn't just 'alert motorists' - it can disturb people for miles (literally) around.
Medievalist · 18/07/2021 06:59

I live in London so I'm destined to accept it until such a time I relocate

You can't escape them! We live in a very beautiful rural area. The noise of bikers when they go past is horrendous. I hate them!

LucretiaBorgia · 18/07/2021 06:59

YANBU, I hate them too. Unfortunately DH loves them.

ViewFromHalfway · 18/07/2021 07:17

Definitely not just a London problem. We live in the countryside in Scotland on a NSL road. The normal traffic going past is alright - you can tune it out. But then a motorbike goes by and all the pets are wide-eyed and the noise is awful.

And as for the noise being a 'safety feature' - it wouldn't be as necessary if motorcyclists weren't so reckless and dangerous about when they choose to overtake etc. (always seems to be on a blind corner and 99% of the time they break the speed limit to do it!!). I know that's a generalisation and I'm sure many are responsible but there are an awful lot of stupid, dangerous twats driving around on bikes.

Trouvaille · 18/07/2021 08:11

No, have a neighbour who revs it and turns it off several times before actually pulling away. Just stfu and give us some peace and quiet!

FizzyLizzie · 18/07/2021 08:23

@Tacket

I live in London so I'm destined to accept it until such a time I relocate but it's nice to have my moaning backed up with equally as fed-up-of-noisy-traffic MNers Grin
I hate to break it to you OP but I am semi rural and it’s awful here. There are three particular twats who have modified their “motorbikes” and make a hell of a racket all day long.

We live close to Stratford upon Avon and on the bank holidays, there are many many bikers who go past here on the way to the river. Personally, this doesn’t bother me. There are no crazy noisy ones and they all ride respectfully. It’s quite a sight to see.

It’s the local twats who want to ruin it for everyone. There are also a couple of blokes driving Audis who have had those modified and they like to make themselves known. I sometimes lie in bed fantasising about shooting a very powerful water pistol out of my window and rendering their mode of transport useless.

I hope he was being ironic?
Emmazebra · 18/07/2021 08:33

Hate them

I’m a road cyclist (and we get plenty of hate) but at least we’re not hitting 100mph and making a racket & polluting the environment!

MostlyMaple · 18/07/2021 08:44

I don't know which are worse - the really loud Harley Davidson type bikes, or the shitty little off-road bikes that sound like a swarm of bees.

Both are God-awful in my opinion!
