Commuter towns/places close to London

Not a AIBU, but posting here for traffic. Thinking of moving from the suburbs of London to somewhere within about 1 to 1.5 hour commute (by train) to London. Not fussed which direction - just somewhere that's got a few things going on the high street, doesn't have to be a village or too rural, though easy access to nature/parks would be great. Where would you move?

Portsmouth is just over 1.5 hrs but I’ve just spent the last two days on the beach. Alternatives that aren’t on the beach but are nearby and very much in nature are Petersfield and Winchester.

Need to get to Canary Wharf, ideally in under 1.5 hours one way by train. Commuting by car is not an option.

All the places names in Hertfordshire are less than 30 minutes into central London

PermanentTemporary · 17/07/2021 22:54

An old thread but I should think the place-names are still valid?

Brentwood area is nice, you can go from Brentwood station to Canary Wharf via Stratford.

St Albans to Canary Wharf is currently 50 mins (via London Bridge) When the Elizabeth Line opens it should be less (25-30 mins to Farringdon, then 2 stops to Canary Wharf which I was amazed to read should take 8 mins)

Houserenoqueen · 17/07/2021 23:03

Anywhere on the Hayes (Kent) line will get you into London Bridge in 40 mins (max), the get the jubilee line to Canary Wharf.

QueefofSheena · 17/07/2021 23:12

You won’t get much in St Albans that’s in walkable distance to the station unless it’s a flat. If you can find a house it’s likely to be small and have no off-road parking unless you go a bit further out of the town centre, which means a drive to the station.

Exactly, St Albans is London prices. Ideally, we'd like to get a detached house with 4 bedrooms and a large garden in a nice location.

Not Much Hadham, you need to drive to a station. Plus you need a shit ton of money to buy there. Ware's nice
toconclude · 17/07/2021 23:18

I grew up in Woking. It's a dump. Avoid.

ChrisS36 · 17/07/2021 23:20

Aylesbury, 50 minutes to Marylebone.

OVienna · 17/07/2021 23:24

Loughton is a London suburb (on the Central Line.) Plenty convenient to Canary Wharf. Ongar, no train station. Can't see the appeal of it, at all, unless you're local with lots of family and friends. Commute could be quite painful.

The other places in Hertfordshire sound good but as a pp said, check the stations. Brentwood also a good option.

DameAlyson · 17/07/2021 23:39

HS1 will take you into Stratford Intl. from North and East Kent. Then DLR to Canary Wharf.
