Just that.

We live in a 3 story house & it’s pretty awful to sleep on a night when it’s hot.

I will be sleeping downstairs tonight.

If you have a fan, put a bucket of ice beside it so that it spreads cool air. Have a tepid bath or shower before getting into bed. Spritz your feet with a cooling spray of water or a nice peppermint foot spray (bodyshop). If you are really, really desperate, sleeping with a damp towel over your feet might take the edge off. I have been living in hot countries for the past 7 years and have employed these tips when air conditioning failed.

TiredButDancing · 17/07/2021 14:08

I tend to dampen my exposed skin and also, slightly, whatever I'm wearing - as it dries, it acts as a coolant. When I was really desperate when I was younger and living in South Africa I would lightly dampen a sarong and sleep with that as a sort of cooling blanket.

LakieLady · 17/07/2021 14:10

All windows open, so that you get a through draught.Unless you live in a high crime area, where it would prevent you sleeping because of the fear. And I keep the bedroom curtains shut all day, so it doesn't get heated up by the sun.

I find I feel cooler in a loose, thin cotton nightdress than I do naked.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 17/07/2021 14:10

I sit outside for 30 minutes before bedtime then I run through the sprinklers. I must look totally bonkers if anyone saw but it cools me right down. Sheets get a bit damp but I really truly can't bear sleeping in the heat so I don't mind

eyeoresancerre · 17/07/2021 14:14

Frozen hot water bottle in a pillowcase! Fill with cold water & put in the freezer for a few hours. Rest your feet on it and within 10 minutes your whole body is lovely and cool. Lasts all night too.

Arthurianna · 17/07/2021 14:16

Try to keep the rooms cooler during the day by keeping curtains closed on the sunny side of the house. Shut the windows and curtains as soon as the sun comes up. You can shove one of those windscreen protectors for keeping cars cool behind the curtains for better insulation.

If it is cool enough on the shady side of the house, you can open the curtains and windows on that side to get some air movement. Don't do it if it is already cooler indoor than out - you'll just warm the rooms up to the outside temperature.

As soon as the temperature outside drops enough - around 10pm maybe - open windows on both sides for a through draught.

We sleep under a cotton cellular blanket on hot nights - much cooler.

100% cotton bedding is cooler than polycotton mix.

Have a cool (not cold!) shower before bed.

If it's really hot and stuffy, sleep on the ground floor.

Buy an air con unit!!!

I actually now dread staying most places in the summer that aren’t my house as it’s possible they won’t be air conned and I will be unbearably hot!!!

doingadisservice · 17/07/2021 14:18

I wrap an iceblock in a pillowcase and put my feet/ankles on it during the night like a reverse hot water bottle

cakeseeker · 17/07/2021 14:20

Cooling pillows under your back. Damp sheet blanket or nightie over the top.

Keep the curtains and windows closed and add some insulation if possible during the day, only open when it's cooler outside than in.

If I had a garden I'd camp outside!

EmeraldShamrock · 17/07/2021 14:22

Fill a hot water bottle with cool water, freeze it for a few hours.
I'd sleep on nails usually the heat was awful last night.

ViewFromTheTowers · 17/07/2021 14:23

Ceiling fan, they may be ugly but my goodness they are amazing. Wear as little clothing as possible, spritz body with water and the ceiling fan cools you right down.

There are gel filled pillows that are only on one side, Ikea do them, so you can cool your head. Ikea also do a gel mattress topper too.

hamsterchump · 17/07/2021 14:33

Washing my hair before bed in cold water and sleeping on it wet always cools me right down.

KibeththeWalker · 17/07/2021 14:45

We have a big gym fan which we have directly at the foot of the bed. We have the windows open behind the head of the bed and the veluxes open in the corridor. It creates a kind of wind tunnel. It works in terms of being cool enough to sleep, but you do wake up desiccated.

I think it might be time to consider a home air con unit.

SnoogyWoo · 17/07/2021 14:45

Freezing cold bath for 10 mins just before bed, sleep like a log!

We got one of these this week. Absolutely AMAZING! I wasn't sleeping at all, now it's bliss.

This!

I've had a/c in my own house for about 10 years now, as the summers are hotter now. You might need earplugs but some systems are pretty quiet these days.

I also dread staying at other places for the same reason as you!

Air conditioning should be as mandatory as central heating. Both are needed for a few months each year.

cluecu · 17/07/2021 16:09

Sounds daft but works for me:

  1. Put my head and pillow where my feet usually go
  2. Stay still. Tossing and turning seems to make it worse and once I resist the urge to keep moving I seem to cool down as I get more sleepy
takemetomars · 17/07/2021 16:11

Honestly, if you can afford it, fit aircon. We did this last year, 1.5k worth twice that for a restful night

takemetomars · 17/07/2021 16:13

We just did the lounge too. Bliss. The units cost pennies to run and they are quiet unlike our freestanding unit which was like an aircraft taking off!!

Makegoodchoices · 17/07/2021 16:33

Open the loft hatch(es) upstairs - lets out some of the hot!

Fantastic tip certainly trying this tonight Smile
Imnothereforthedrama · 17/07/2021 16:46

Windows and doors open in the day for ventilation, light cool duvet or blanket sleep naked or cool light pjs and just hope it’s not too bad .

mrsbyers · 17/07/2021 16:46

Cotton sheet in the fridge for an hour before bed
