AIBU who's the CF? Another parking thread!!!

My neighbour opposite my house wrote a letter and put it in my windshield this morning basically a very scary drafted letter explaining that I am not to park outside their house as it is a spot reserved for them by the council to charge their car in their house as they are elderly.

They write that they have a bin that they put out with a note explaining this so that people do not park there and that they own the spot. I parked there yesterday morning and haven't moved my car until today when I saw the note. I have lived at my house for over 6 years and never had an issue parking there before as have others parked there with seemingly no issues.

There was no bin reserving the spot on the road when I parked there (there was a bin on the pavement however) and I didn't think to check their bin for a note explaining not to park there on that day. They say in the letter they will take me to court if I park there again and that they are battling the same issue with others, however I have spoken to my Dad who thinks they are just CF's trying to scare people into letting them have that space.

There are plenty of elderly people on our road who don't request for a space to be reserved nor did I think the council even allowed this. AIBU to keep parking here? I only park here if there is no where else to park but would happily move if they put a bin there with a note politely asking if they can have the spot for the day or something.

It's a cul de sac and I have a child so I can't walk too far due to health issues. And can they really take me to court or can I find out whether the council really have reserved them this spot? I apologise for my terrible handwriting and drawling skills.

They are having you on. It is illegal to have a charging point installed if you do not have a private driveway or garage on your property. Here’s a leaflet from one council regarding the rules around charging at home. You most certainly are not allowed to trail wires across the pavement, and the street charging points being introduced are for al users, they’re not private.

I'm not sure on the legality of a charging wire hanging over a public footpath from someone's house to the road; you may want to check on that with the council!

@Soontobe60

A most excellent helpful post

Ah the power of MN comes to the rescue!!

StoneofDestiny · 18/07/2021 21:02

They are lying, aggressive and CF neighbours. Their age is irrelevant in this context.
Check with council - I'm certain they are lying, and the council will lost likely contact them re the cable across the pavement and bin hazard.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 19/07/2021 09:12

Have you rang the council yet op?

LookItsMeAgain · 19/07/2021 11:27

Who is parking outside your house? A different neighbour?

Apologies if this has been asked and answered already but I've read the thread and can't see it mentioned so far.

Why can't you park outside your house?

Window1 · 04/08/2021 05:12

Interested to know if you managed to find out anything official?

MuddyStiletto · 04/08/2021 07:57

Interested to find out if this is resolved now

@crazymicrowave123 You drawl very nicely Smile

StoneofDestiny · 04/08/2021 19:34

Yes - I'd be interested too 👂

DynamoKev · 04/08/2021 19:50

Windshield? Is this in the USA?

Luscinia · 04/08/2021 20:20

Round here the council sends a letter asking for any objections before disabled bays are given to residents and the same for installing electric charging points. You would have been notified if there was going to be a change of use.

amicissimma · 04/08/2021 21:31

I live in a street with no off-road parking. A few of my neighbours have electric cars and they run a cable from their house to the car, which can be a little distance along the pavement if they couldn't park outside their houses. One has a proper rubber strip thing to cover the cable, the others use duct tape. It's probably not strictly 'allowed' but we all get on, so we look out for wires when we're walking and don't resent their presence (nor hoses, nor wires when people are cleaning their cars, etc).

No one usually tries to claim a space, but if they need one for a short while they tend to put a bin with a notice saying when it's needed and what for and people don't park there. The norm is that someone who knows s/he'll be moving before the space is needed parks in it, saving someone else having to move, or if it's the only space when someone parks they leave their house number on the dashboard so they can be asked to move when necessary.

They are CF’s and liars to boot. I would point them in the direction of the nearest estate agents. They need to buy a house with a drive. They don’t own the land outside their house

Interesting - I learned windscreen which is what I always call it - but I don’t come from London. I suppose like most words, spellings and pronunciations, the US one will prevail over time.

crazymicrowave123 · 06/08/2021 09:42

@EL8888 called the council, nightmare to get a hold of, so gave up. Threw the CF letter in the bin have parked there once since, as there was no where else to park, nothing happened and no letter so I shall just ignore it I suppose

lastcall · 06/08/2021 10:08

I'd do the same, OP. The street space would be marked by the council if it was 'special' in any way.

EL8888 · 06/08/2021 15:02

@lastcall so would l

Thevoiceofreason2021 · 06/08/2021 15:17

Check with the council what the situation is. Where I live is the same - it’s a constant battle for parking. Many of my neighbours have now got allocated disabled parking . If walking is difficult for you maybe you should also try to get an allocated parking place. Alternatively lobby the council for a residence parking permit system, this intern reduces the competition for space.

UDontDans2Tekno · 06/08/2021 15:25

@Fiddliestofsticks

I think I would actually really want to write a note back saying, cuntil the council come and mark the pay as disabled/electric car only/permit or they can show you the deeds of the purchase of that land from the council then I will consider it as public highway, just like the rest of the street. Had they just come and spoken to you politely, you would of course have understood their issues, but the threatening note with what seems to be lies has ruined any polite relationship we may have had. I won't park in the space needlessly, but if it is available and is the closest space to my home then I will park in it as it is entirely legal".

haha!
