Is this job worth it?

Around 3 mounts ago I took a cleaning job for a b&b. Originaly I was given day shifts however over the past few weeks all of my shifts have been night shifts. I do not drive and I live 7 miles away from the guest house. Whilst there is plenty of convenient transport during the day, there is none during the night meaning I end up paying quite a lot of my wages on a cab fares, on top of this it making me exhausted and I’m not kidding when I say if I’m not at work I am asleep in bed. I hardly eat (don’t have time) and and having hardly any time to myself. I also have a part time career job that they were okay with when I told them about it, but now it’s come to function are being difficult about. There is no way I am putting a side job on top of my career so will likely not have a job after Monday, but even if they do get over this I am beginning to wonder if this is wroth it. Yes I will miss the money, but I feel my mental health is more worth it.

YABU- Keep the job
YANBU- Resign, really not worth it

Resign. Not worth it.

Taxi charges are ridiculous here. It would cost around £16 to go 7 miles here and that’s just one way. We don’t have Uber.

You are tired and the hours are not compatible with your travel options.

Look for something else x

Yes it cost me around £25 per night to get home, I feel I should wait till I have another job first however until I resign.

If you don’t have a financial cushion or sufficient other income you may need to cling on until you can get another job. But I would prioritise looking for that job.

Alternatively, can you push back on b&b owners and get back to the hours you were originally hired for or renegotiate pay for night hours?

ahoyshipmates · 16/07/2021 17:18

Do they know you have no transport and that it costs you a fortune in taxis to work the night shifts?

If they don't know, then they might be understanding about rearranging your shifts to the daytime if you explain it to them.

If they do know - then they're being really unreasonable by making you work night shifts and spend most of your earnings on travel costs. I'd leave.

Etinox · 16/07/2021 17:41

Definitely tell them you can’t continue to do the job due to the taxi fares. If they don’t swap your shifts, offer to pay or give you a lift, then leave.

I would ask if they can change shifts, tell them how much it's costing you, £25 a night is stupid!
If not, look for something else before you leave!

Yes I think I am going to start looking for another job, but will in the meantime (for now at least) carry on.

The owners DO know that I can’t get home as I have flagged that to them many times, and essentially have been told that there is nothing they can do and it’s my responsibility to get home.

Other workers have offerd to give me a lift, not that I feel that they should drive 7 miles in The opposite direction and anyway there’s often no one else there to give me a lift.

Yes quit now

Eleoura · 16/07/2021 20:06

Are you on a rota, so 1 week of nights every x weeks? Have you asked when you will move back to day shifts?

Out of interest, what cleaning is there to do in the middle of night in a B&B? Surely the guests are all sleeping?

TARDISLover · 16/07/2021 20:34

No, it’s 0 hours so changes weekly. They get me to do the commumal areas (reception, Restaurant, Kitchen ect)
