Drop in level

My youngest dd has always been above expected for Maths, Reading and writing.her report has come back today saying she is 'working towards age related expectations'.

Remote learning was poor and I hired a tutor to help her as I have another child to help too. I can't understand how she has dropped so much, she is reading chapter books and writes with good grammar & and spelling

There are a few spelling mistakes in the report too.

AIBU to query this with the teacher? They have done no work for three weeks and have played most of the time (great but if my dd is falling behind I think they should fo more work with her)

Sorry I should say she's in Year 2.

I would query it. I had similar and my Ds’s teacher had made an error on the report.
Was she beyond expectations at the end of year 1? If so I think it is very reasonable to ask what has happened this year, and what can you do alongside the school to ensure she catches up.

My dd puts her hand up but says no one comes to her in class. It's concerning to me that they have not revised times tables and forecast work in Class to secure their learning. It's all PE and playing.

I will definitely query it but does this mean she's not achieving the right level?

You should query it because it might be the wrong child's report.

That’s a big change. I’d question why you have not been made aware of any issues before now?
A little drop might be to be expected in the circumstances for this year. It’s definitely my experience in my school that yr1/yr2 are the years that have struggled to catch up to where we might hope they’d be.
But to go from above to working towards is odd and should have been already flagged up to you.

I have been told that she was working slowly on parents evening and my dd said she found the work hard. They are a mixed Year 3/Year 2 class and the work was often set at the Year 3 standard. Dd puts her hand up for help but no one comes. The teacher said she doesn't come to dd because she is capable, so I'm confused now as clearly dd is not capable!!!!

If she has gone from working above expected to working below they have a real problem with her lack of progress. A child working above expected in y1 will overlap considerably with a child working below expected in y2, so essentially they are saying she's made little to no progress almost year. They should have raised it with you far sooner (by Feb half term as a minimum) and put in place interventions to help.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 16/07/2021 18:21

I would also be sceptical that a lot of schools will suggest kids have made low progress this year and blame Covid, then will suddenly show they are back on track next year and claim credit for it. Hold them accountable for this year. Such a drop in level is not acceptable.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 16/07/2021 18:22

Oh and while you are there definitely raise the poor spelling on the report.

A qualified teacher should have high enough academic skills to either spell correctly or make use of a spell checker.

I did complain to the Head that there seemed to be no support in the lesson which was leading dd to have to 'figure it out for herself thus taking her longer. She's quiet and has good behaviour but o worry she will get left behind.

After my letter a month ago I hoped there would be a change but things are getting worse!
