Noisy holiday neighbours - Cornwall idyll ruined

226 replies

amateurschoolhunter · 16/07/2021 08:28

I'm currently on holiday in a small Cornish beach resort with my parents and children. This is our 7th year in a row in the same place and every year until now it's been idyllic
But yesterday a family moved into the neighbouring holiday home which has a pool in the garden. There was a lot of noise all afternoon and evening but as it was the first day I ignored it. But we were all woken today up at 7am by kids shrieking in the pool, hot tub whirring and general noise. AIBU to get on the phone to their letting agent? This is a naice holiday destination and we usually only hear seagulls

Be kind = don't allow your children to yell shriek and scream at 7 am in the morning.

FAQs · 16/07/2021 11:45

@tentotwelve

Off topic but the same place for 7 years,

So what? Did you mean to sound sneery?

Is it sneery?
MaMelon · 16/07/2021 11:47

Yes it’s sneery - it’s totally irrelevant, why even mention it? Unless you’re getting a dig in.

gillysSong · 16/07/2021 11:52

Maybe time to broaden your horizons after 7 years you must have done everything there.

MaMelon · 16/07/2021 11:55

See?

Viviennemary · 16/07/2021 11:57

It is sneery. I like going back to the same place. Dh doesn't. He's been so doesn't see the point of going back even if it was great. Confused

newnortherner111 · 16/07/2021 11:57

I think they are being unreasonable but I expect there is nothing you can do.

If you have been every year, you could make up a story about some of the neighbours having done something nasty to noisy visitors, and tell them this. Allege tyres being let down or something like that, which 'happened a few years ago'.

Make it out as if you are being nice to them. Resentment towards holiday visitors is not unusual.

you move every year or 2 as well? Hmm

We go on holiday to the same place every year as well. And the other 2 or 3 holidays we take that year, we go to a different country or parts of countries we haven't been to.

You sound very narrow-minded for someone talking about "broadening your horizons" Grin

SpeakingFranglais · 16/07/2021 12:02

I’d complain to the agent, I think 9-9 is more than reasonable

Gh0stontoast · 16/07/2021 12:05

Went camping and the large brood in the next tent were screaming and squabbling at 6 am (which explains why there was a space next to their tent!).

Just to add, knowing Cornish holiday rental prices - we rent in Cornwall at least once most years - it's unlikely that anyone renting a place with a pool is living in terrible conditions in a small home with a small garden.

That holiday let will be thousands of pounds per week.[/quote]
I meant

For the last 18 months. It’s been shit for the majority of people. Job losses. Hard times. Sickness.

I don’t mean horrible conditions that they live in……

I don’t know anyone who has found this time joyful!!

As per my original post. Kindness is all it takes.

@ElsieMc

Years back we were staying in Cornwall and visited Rock for a day at the beach. I called into a bakers for some lunch and got a very chilly reception. That was until I opened my mouth to order - I have a northern accent. They thought I was part of the Hooray Henry set who used to descend on the village which included certain well known faces. The staff told me how appallingly rude, entitled and drunken they were. The week rounded off horribly for some poor family whose teenage son went over the cliffs whilst drunk.

I don't think it is anything new but exacerbated this year.

As for us, we booked a cottage in a fairly remote area, but with one next door neighbour. Sadly there had been noisy holiday makers because they had constructed a dog kennels alongside the property boundary, well away from their own home. They had two rescue spaniels who howled and barked the whole time. The cottage owner told me it was to drive her customers away. And it worked.

Rock is notorious for a certain type of badly behaved yahoo.
BaconAndAvocado · 16/07/2021 12:15

Horrible for you. A bit of noise is ok/to be expected when on holiday but 7am is just inconsiderate.

Hope you get it sorted.

Nocutenamesleft · 16/07/2021 12:19

@amateurschoolhunter

Thanks everyone for the different points of view. We've recently had a huge family tragedy which is probably making me more emotional than usual.

I'm going to make sure we are up earlier to get on the beach - and hit the gin in the evenings Smile

Awe. Bless you.

Maybe go round and have a chat? Might be nice people. Depending on whether you want that. Or if you want to be on your own. That’s fair enough. Sending love during this difficult time for you after the tragedy x

thistooshallpas5 · 16/07/2021 12:22

Parents who allow your children to scream (special needs aside) unless they are being murdered please stop ! It's not necessary kids can play without shrieking !

SofiaMichelle · 16/07/2021 12:26

@Nocutenamesleft

As per my original post. Kindness is all it takes.

It would be kind of the neighbours to not allow shrieking in the pool at 7am.

joystir59 · 16/07/2021 12:33

Please don't complain to them or about them. Just enjoy your holiday, kids screaming with pleasure at 7am isn't the worst thing to endure.

MaMelon · 16/07/2021 12:41

kids screaming with pleasure at 7am isn't the worst thing to endure

No, it’s not the worst thing ever obviously - but it’s pretty grim and not what most people want on their much needed, longed for, expensive holiday.

Gh0stontoast · 16/07/2021 12:44

Is Rock where the sweaty chef has a house?

Blossomtoes · 16/07/2021 12:44

@Viviennemary

If I was the letting agent I would say tone down the noise. If they didn't they would be evicted. Or I would drain the pool and disconnect the hot tub.
No you wouldn’t. Or at least not if you didn’t want to be sued.

People are paying a vast amount of money for their holidays this year. I dread to think how much a property in a “naice” part of Cornwall with a pool and hot tub has cost them. It’s a one off, OP, they’ll be back in Marbella or Tuscany next year. This year they’re here and you’re going to have to suck it up.

Gh0stontoast · 16/07/2021 12:44

Sweary not sweaty!

MaMelon · 16/07/2021 12:48

No you wouldn’t. Or at least not if you didn’t want to be sued

Depends what the T&Cs say. If, for example, they quite clearly say 'no noise outwith the hours of 9am and 9pm' then the letting agent would be quite within their rights.

Flossatops · 16/07/2021 12:49

I think many people overdo it on their first day on holiday - if things don't improve after that, you may need to do something. Tell them you've heard that someone's apparently going to complain to the agent about the noise, if you don't want to get directly involved!

ivfgottwins · 16/07/2021 12:54

Are your children the type to be "seen and not heard" then OP? Because kids enjoying themselves on holiday are going to make a bit of noise aren't they? And it's a bit miserable to go round and complain 🤷‍♀️

Originalyellowbelly · 16/07/2021 12:54

Anyone else wanting to know where this house with the pool and hot tub is so you can book it next year? It sounds idyllic. Grin
