Fire alarm help

I’ve had a leak in my house, the water has gone through the ceiling and into the fire alarm, it has set all 3 fire alarms off and they are going crazy, the noise is painful it’s like torture, been going on for an hour now and I can’t take it any longer, I’ve called the council who said 3 hour wait, I have an autistic child who is kicking off, surely there is a way to get them off?!

You'd be best placed to google the specific brand of fire alarm, that should help you with instructions on how to silence or remove them.

PumpkinKlNG · 15/07/2021 18:14

No idea of the brand tbh, can’t even think straight the noise is horrific

No help sorry but I'm wondering if you live near me as an alarm has been going off for hours! The noise must be driving you mad. Is there anywhere you can go for a while?

toastantea · 15/07/2021 18:16

Is there a way to contact the fire brigade other than 999?

Royalbloo · 15/07/2021 18:17

Either take the batteries out or turn off the fuse in the box

LemonSwan · 15/07/2021 18:18

Ahh we had this. Turn off the fuse box if its central wired.

(In our house turning off the fuse box turned on the burgular alarm! ahah)

The solution was to have an engineer disconnect it.

I would leave for a few hours if the fuse box doesn't work.

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 18:20

This happened at work. Switching off the main box didn’t work for some unknown reason, so we unscrewed the units which managed to silence them.
If that fails, can you reach to duct tape a pillow over them?

There's probably a back up power supply in case of a power cut
Aqua55 · 15/07/2021 18:21

In the words of MC Hammer...

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 18:48

@girlmom21. Probably, but non of us are paid electricians so we opted for what we could do and knew where the primary fuse board was. Would have been more helpful if the company had not decided that I’m order to save money, they stopped paying the fire alarm service company their fees. So we spent a day without fire alarm cover and it ended up costing the company far more.
Not great in a care home.

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 18:49

Oh fat fingers and small phone - were not are and I’m not I’m.

Noterook · 15/07/2021 18:50

Your fire service will have an admin line on their website, as its causing distress to your child I would phone it (they'll only answer if not tied up on 999 calls so don't worry about that).

girlmom21 · 15/07/2021 18:55

@Bargebill19 in a care home?! That's awful!

Coulddowithanap · 15/07/2021 18:56

The fire service may be able to silence the alarm but an engineer will need to reset it (depending on the type anyway)

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 19:02

@girlmom21. Yep and yes. But not the worst thing by several miles. (I no longer work there).

PumpkinKlNG · 15/07/2021 19:02

Thanks everyone, didn’t really want to call the fire brigade as it’s not a fire didn’t want to bother them 😔 the noise is still on going can’t even escape it as it’s in every room, still waiting for the council, been over an hour now, 2 more to go... (tried to turn it off at the mains but unfortunately doesn’t change anything)

Bargebill19 · 15/07/2021 19:04

Pillow suffocate it or try to unscrew it, if you can reach.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 15/07/2021 19:05

@pumpkinKING does it have batteries in?
Ours started beeping like a fucker through the night once. Turned it off at the mains and still beeping. Turns out they had batteries in them too 🙄.
Hope you get sorted soon 🤞🤞

Outbutnotoutout · 15/07/2021 19:07

Smash it with a hammer, even if you get it off the ceiling and shove it under some cushions

Coulddowithanap · 15/07/2021 19:08

If you take the cover off there should be a square battery in there as a backup. You could try removing that temporarily.

PumpkinKlNG · 15/07/2021 19:14

Been trying to open it but I can just about reach them even standing on a chair, will try again. Daughters in the garden and won’t come in, don’t blame her but I need to be by the door so I can hear them knock

WaltzingToWalsingham · 15/07/2021 19:24

Our mains-wired smoke alarm also has batteries in (so it still works even in a power cut).

If you're having trouble identifying the brand, google "smoke alarm" and look at the images. You might find one that looks similar to yours. Once you've identified the brand, you should be able to find the operating instructions online and then you can see how to remove the cover (sometimes you have to insert a flat-head screwdriver into a slot, for example).

Don't smash your smoke alarm. They contain a radioactive source, and if you smash it, radioactive particles could escape over your house.

PumpkinKlNG · 15/07/2021 19:29

Thank you I will try that, yes I can’t get the cover off I’m struggling to and just about being able to reach it makes it even more difficult, I’ve resorted to desperate measures and have put on a pair of my daughters ear defenders not that it’s helping much!
