Are mopeds a big no no?

Name changed

We live on an estate with a one car per household policy. When we bought the house we had two cars, the vendor assured us that in practice many households, including theirs, have more than one car here, and that parking was never an issue as there are also enough households with no car. We naively believed him and bought the house. Once here we soon realised that parking is a contentious issue and the subject of many an angry post in the estate’s social media group, as well daily notes left on cars that are parked in the wrong spot. DH therefore decided it best that he got a moped for his daily commute which he promptly did. So, we are no longer contributing to the parking issue anymore, moped lives in the garden when not in use. Someone today has complained that the moped is very loud, and that they’d have thought whoever owns it would have had more consideration for everyone else on the estate.

I feel quite irked by this as DH sold his car and got the moped primarily so we wouldn’t be contributing to the parking issue anymore, although obviously it does also mean less hassle for him hunting around for an empty visitor’s spot, or parking off the estate and walking across which he used to do, instead of nicking someone else’s spot as many others seem happy enough to do.

My question is this: is it unreasonable to use a moped for your daily commute when you live on a housing estate? I can’t see how it’s any more or less inconsiderate to using one when you live in other scenarios e.g on a street etc. Or is it just inconsiderate no matter where you live?

As to clothing, I have what look like jeans that in fact contain Kevlar, I'm currently coveting a jacket that looks like a normal fashion one that is Kevlar, I have heeled suede boots which are designed for motorbikes - don't assume it's not protective gear.

@MrsFin

How has the estate banned two cars per house? How does that work with houses that have adult DCs at home? Pretty much every house has more than two cars these days.
It’s not in the deeds but all roads in and around the estate are restricted to 2 hours no return. Each house has an allocated parking space (very few with drives) then there are a handful of visitor spaces which aren’t restricted either. So the only way to have two or more cars is to hunt out a visitor spot which obviously makes it difficult for any visitors, or take another resident’s spot, either with or without their consent. Usually it’s without, hence all the agro in the group.

Sounds like a really nice charming place to live.......🤔

@PigletJohn Its a Vespa he got brand new from a dealership so I’m guessing it’s had the silencer fitted and he defo hasn’t souped it up…

If it's a vespa it's likely a 125 so faster than a 50cc moped. Certainly not noisy! Your neighbours are idiots. I ride a 125 and it's quieter than a car.

SpartacusJam · 15/07/2021 17:37

@SilverOak

The road is still hard regardless of your speed... at 30mph an unprotected hand or knee which hits the tarmac will wear down to the bone in less than 1 second. Not to mention the weight of the moped which can break an ankle beyond repair if you’re not wearing solid boots.
Yes, was worried about this when he first got it. He does wear all the protective gear thankfully.

Unfortunately you have a neighbour problem! We have two very loud motorbikes, I'll visit if you want to really wind them up! Seriously unless there's a covenant there is nothing they can do.
Don’t tempt me! Grin

He could get an electric moped :)

Childrenofthestones · 15/07/2021 17:48

Sell the moped, buy yourself a hog.😁

I'd say this in the group. Then leave it. These things are always full of miserable old cunts. Then I'd think of really annoying things to do that they can't really make you stop doing. 😂 actually I wouldn't leave the group so I could see all the moaning 😂😂😂

I have a Vespa! Current one is my third - the first one lasted 17 years. They’re so much fun.

@SilverOak

It isn’t unreasonable to have a moped. My biggest concern is for the rider, who always seems to think the road is softer when you’re on a moped. Off topic but it puzzles me why motorbike riders wear full leathers while moped riders do the same speed on the same roads and think that ordinary clothes are sufficient.
Depends on the spec of the moped. If you're talking bog standard basic then top speed is maybe 40mph. Motorbike (of which we have many) top speed is 165, even faster downhill! Hence the gear! Yes, I know we're not allowed to go faster than 70mph in the UK (but we do)!!
WrongWayApricot · 15/07/2021 18:03

Depends what time he's leaving and coming back. If it's in the night I might wheel it off and on the estate before turning it on. After 6am and before 11pm it shouldn't be an issue I'd have thought?

Most of us wear protective gear - you dress for the slide, not the ride - and are perfectly aware of the dangers. I’ve had a full licence for 30 years - riding a Vespa is a choice because of urban life.

@NeedNewKnees Vespas are gorgeous! I thought about doing the CBT myself a few years ago, got as far as the shop to test sitting on one. I’m a total short arse though so my tip toes could barely touch the ground which freaked me out quite a bit. Been stuck in cars ever since Hmm

He leaves well after 6am and returns well before 11pm so all good on that front. She could be a shift worker or have other reasons to want a quieter environment during the day but like some have pointed out that’s just not going to happen on a housing estate like this one unfortunately.

I would reply back maybe if more residents got a moped and sold the car it would stop you crying like babies about the parking situation. Sorry you don't like the noise, happy to revert back to a car if you prefer that we take your space every day.
Sign it off with,hadn't realised we moved to WHINGE Street

Mopeds don't go anywhere near the speed a motorbike goes, many mopeds don't reach much more than 30-40 mph
