I own a PR agency and my MIL has never supported my career since I had a baby last year. Today as I was working, she said to me: ‘it’s unfortunate you can’t get a real job like a 9-5’.

Why didn't you reply something like 'what makes you think I can't? But why would I choose to work hours someone else dictates for less than £9 per hour, when I have my own PR Agency, dictate my own hours and earn a lot more?'

Most people who own their own businesses work long hours. Maybe she just meant it's a pity you have to work so hard?

People who denigrate you for not having a "proper job" when you are self employed are bitter and envious. They have no idea how hard you work or what you have achieved. Why dignify their opinion?

I hear this a lot from people who run indie businesses, like those of us who sell on online platforms or our own website. Ive just made a break from a bunch of particularly unpleasant people who called me a "tat seller" because I sell antiques online.

The kinds of people who use that old fashioned expression would not have the taste and discrimination to recognize a valuable antique if they fell over one. I suspect they are not only jealous of what Ive achieved but also the tremendous pleasure and sense of achievement I get from running my own business. They would laugh the other side of their faces if they saw just the first page of my Paypal account and what I make in a week.
