To think this is a really bad idea?

Company I work for have done well over the past couple of years. They have decided to throw a party in September to say thank you to the staff. 250+ people will be invited, held in a big marquee (assuming they can even find one at this short notice!).

I don’t want to go. It seems mental given the current situation. AIBU?

I voted YABU as you could just not go?

TidyDancer · 14/07/2021 17:44

It's a lovely idea, but I don't think I'd be going so I don't blame you for being hesitant.

Etinox · 14/07/2021 17:46

As someone currently planning a similar but admittedly smaller event for next week 😬I’d say YABU and it’d be better next spring.

Bearsinmotion · 14/07/2021 17:48

I won’t go, I think it’s ridiculous. It’s less than three weeks after schools go back, which is likely to coincide with a rise in infections and burst bubbles for parents.Just wondering what other people think and whether they are just going to end up with a big empty tent.

It'll be fine.

Mostly vaccinated people in a marquee.

Almost risk free.

If you're unvaccinated, you don't have to go. You'd be at vanishingly low risk of serious illnessaanyway .

Anniegetyourgun · 14/07/2021 17:53

If there's the smallest chance they might be handing out lavish gifts to all who attend, I'd be there Wink

Otherwise, no chance. Not even because of Covid, but it would be as good an excuse as any.

TheFoundations · 14/07/2021 17:56

Is there any pressure to go? If not, the people who are ok with it will be the ones there, and the people who are not ok with it won't be.

It's got it's own 'ok-ness' filter.

SheilaWilcox · 14/07/2021 17:58

This is why this whole thing has dragged on so long; people doing what they are allowed to do (and not allowed in some cases,) rather than what they SHOULD do.

I agree with you OP. Selfish idea.

Ifitquacks · 14/07/2021 17:59

I’d go, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to.

Bearsinmotion · 14/07/2021 18:11

Interesting that the votes and comments seem contradictory.

I don’t think it counts as outdoors, I assuming it will be one of those marquees with walls to protect people from the weather.

I’m also not convinced it’s going to help staff morale, if opinions in the company are divided like the votes. Next spring, great! This September not so much.

Zebraaa · 14/07/2021 20:24

Yawn. Think with your brain, the risk is tiny.

Ifitquacks · 14/07/2021 20:24

If people want to go they can, and it will improve their morale. If they don’t want to they don’t have to, and their morale can be left alone Smile.

EileenGC · 14/07/2021 20:28

I’d go but I’m not scared of Covid. I’d want everyone to be tested and/or vaccinated before attending though, and that’s the norm where I live so no one would have any issues.
Perfectly reasonable to not want to go, though. I wouldn’t think it weird if you were my colleague and declined to come.

Imnothereforthedrama · 14/07/2021 20:34

Oh good god op I can’t believe there are people that think like you still .
1st of all September is weeks away
2nd a marquee is not indoors
3rdly it’s nice of your employer
4th don’t go if you feel strongly but don’t go around at work telling anyone who listens how unsafe it is as nobody cares .
People want to enjoy themselves not hide away.
You can’t live your life living in fear and that’s exactly what your doing .
Covid has been around 18+ months now are you still going to be like this if it’s around in another 18 months ?

MadeOfStarStuff · 14/07/2021 20:38

I think it’s a bad idea for the company because rules might change by September which lead to it being cancelled anyway.

But for individuals it’s just their own choice of whether to attend or not. There’s no need for high drama over it, if you think it’s a bad idea don’t go.

fourminutestosavetheworld · 14/07/2021 20:56

"I won’t go, I think it’s ridiculous. It’s less than three weeks after schools go back, which is likely to coincide with a rise in infections and burst bubbles for parents."

No bubbles in September.

Bearsinmotion · 14/07/2021 21:00

Like I said, I have no intention of going. No drama, I just don’t think it’s a good idea. Am interested to see what others think.

OP posts:
Ifitquacks · 14/07/2021 21:04

It’s a good idea for those who want to go and will have a good time 🤷🏻‍♀️

RestartGame · 14/07/2021 21:09

I think everyone has to judge for themselves. I have been double jabbed yet have covid now, whole family needing to isolate, breathless just walking about the house, it’s still a pain In the arse to have even if not deadly.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 14/07/2021 21:15

@Zebraaa

Yawn. Think with your brain, the risk is tiny.
How dismissive. Are you this snotty in tral life or just on anonymous forums?
