‘All women should be offered pain relief for coil fitting’

I’ve just read a news story about a lot of women finding coil fittings painful and traumatic (certainly was the case for me a decade ago) I think naga munchetty said on the radio or in an interview somewhere that it was an excruciating experience for her.
I’ve seen an NHS response that apparently guidelines state women are offered appropriate pain relief for a fitting. Does anyone know what they mean by this?

I was advised to take a paracetamol beforehand, is this what they are referring to?

"I have trigeminal neuralgia (it's not called 'the suicide disease' for nothing) and rheumatoid arthritis which has totally fucked my feet so I know all about pain, thanks. And my coil fittings have been sheer, exquisite agony. Every single one."

Tsk, tsk, tsk, @TheVampiresWife - do you not know that @minty133's experience of pain is universally applicable because we are all exactly the same as her? Wink

@lifehappened

Okkkkk I considered having one of these now I'm done with babies but I think I'll pass on that now. Sorry you all went through this. Sounds rank! Although *@toastantea* it's not the earlier posters fault if it didn't hurt them! Ffs she's allowed her own experience, she's not negating anyone else's! It's absolutely not her fault that this is, in the main barbaric!
Don’t be put off. I have found mine brilliant and it has saved me having a hysterectomy.

I had one years ago and it was horrific. I passed out in the toilet, last thing I saw was the sweat dripping from my nose as I had my head between my knees. The staff were very worried about me, never again.

Crippled too with arthritis but the pain of 2020 was horrific agony period pain for up to 10 hours for weeks on end, never again, I’m now back 0n eostrogen tablets little pain if any each month they keep me regular otherwise I either spot bleed every day or never know when next period is. Life compared to 2020 is though agony at times better than that.

I asked about a coil when I was about 21 and the GP actually told me she would rather not do it because it would really really hurt since I had never given birth.
I appreciated the honesty and now when other GPs ask if I have considered it I say thanks but no thanks.

I passed out when I had mine done Sad

MumofSpud · 17/07/2021 16:14

I have had a coil for, maybe 20 years so have had it refitted a few times by different people.
Have I been lucky that I have never had 'horrific pain'.
I remember once, after, I got a bit of a tummy ache but that was it.
Much better than having monthly periods!

Ilikeviognier · 17/07/2021 16:28

I had labour like pains after mine was fitted…something didn’t feel right. Cue hospital visit where it turned out it had perforated and I was now hanging out near my pancreas. Had to have keyhole surgery to get that bloody thing removed. NEVER again.

ohsuzannah · 17/07/2021 21:13

Oh and it became embedded and I needed a general anaesthetic to get it out Angry
