Noisy Washing Machine

I know this isn't an AIBU but I wasn't sure what thread to put it on.

We feel our washing machine is getting louder and louder. We're on very good terms with both of our neighbours and have apologised to them who both say they can't hear it. We're not sure if they're just being polite?

What time is the earliest you'd use it and the latest time? 😊

Earliest would be 10am, latest would be 8pm (as in, the cycle finishes then). I try to do it between 11am and 7pm though to not take this piss.

SoddingWeddings · 14/07/2021 09:26

Have you checked the feet are balanced?

DocsOddSocks · 14/07/2021 09:29

@ChainJane Thankyou Smile They say they can't hear anything but we're not sure if they were just being polite.

@SoddingWeddings I'll get my husband to check. Its only on the spin cycle its really bad. It sounds like it's about to take off!

Earliest 7am, no later than 10pm (although there are no children near us... if we had children next door I would make sure it ended earlier, maybe 7pm).

I think noisy washing machines are often due to unbalanced feet though, so you could potentially fix it.

WheresMySnackPack · 14/07/2021 09:30

Probably 9am and latest 8pm if it's a short cycle .

My hoover washing machine when it's on spin is the most loudest washing machine we've ever had!

It sounds like it's about to take off down the runway at Heathrow.

DocsOddSocks · 14/07/2021 09:31

@applestrudels No kids either side Smile I'll get my husband to check the feet when he gets home Smile

I've stuck a bit of carpet under mine which dampens the noise somewhat

It could getting to the end of its life, or at least the bearings need replacing and depending on the age, it's when you make the decision about whether it's worth spending money on it.

We replaced our 13 YO washing machine last year because it made an absolute racket and moved around loads on the spin cycle and when we saw how quiet the new one was, we realised how bad the old one had become.

But your neighbours genuinely might not be able to hear it, depending on the construction and layout of your houses. Or it might be quite muffled and they don't notice/aren't bothered. Unless they complain, I wouldn't adjust the times you use it. Why put yourself at an inconvenience when it's not causing a problem?

DocsOddSocks · 14/07/2021 09:34

@WheresMySnackPack Oh yes, we know that feeling!! 🤣 We have a baby so its trying to keep on top of the washing but at the same time, not annoy the neighbours x

@Mabelface Another good idea, thankyou Smile

@BarbaraofSeville Its only 3 years old so hopefully it doesn't need replacing. I can hear one of our neighbours alarms going off in a morning so that makes me think they probably can hear it Sad Like you say though, if they've not complained Smile

My washing machine is soo quiet that I have several times checked if its actually working- I'm in 2bed house and doors are open. So I put the washing on as early as 6am sometimes and last load has finished around 9pm too. I don't hear my neighbours washing machines either, but I've seen their washing hanging out as early as 7.30am sometimes. Depends on how the houses are built too I think. And obviously how "accepting" are the neighbours with everyday noise. I wouldn't care - if washing has to be done, then it has to be done. I'd draw a line if you're washing machine sounds like you're washing bricks at 2am - then I'd definitely tell you. 😉
