To ask what your job is if you earn £50k plus

Just that really!

I'm in a job that I fell into many years ago. Its OK but I'm bored. It's a professional job that many people would think earns about twice what it does. I'm on approx 30k (people are always shocked to learn this) and will be forever in this job (no real promotion open to me). Its a sector a LOT of people want to work in and in which some people will work for free. The result is we are actually paid very little - and people outside the sector are always shocked by this.

I'm considering a career change, but have no ideas what to. So if you're earning 50k plus sell me hour career. I have a degree, an MA and I'm sure lots of transferable skills.

OP posts:
Notmydaughteryoubitch · 15/07/2021 23:52

Social work manager in public sector.

scubadive · 16/07/2021 00:01

@user1471548941 Hi did you do a project management qualification at all. I ended up project managing in my last role but lots of project management jobs mention amoeba sort of qualification.

nanbread · 16/07/2021 00:09

I work in marketing with 15 years' experience, on 50k... could earn more in a more senior role (but that would mean less flexibility and more responsibility), or if I went to work for a different industry like tobacco, finance or govt.

Some things are worth more than £.

LondonLife3 · 16/07/2021 00:29

Grin An other IT contractor - £500-600 a day, been self employed 4 years now and never had a gap.

helpIhateclothesshopping · 16/07/2021 01:08

OP you sound like a Psychologist, I know they are seriously underpaid and many work for free

memberofthewedding · 16/07/2021 01:37

Self employed antiques dealer. Have been in the trade since the 1980s.

Lovinglifeeveryday · 16/07/2021 02:09

I worked as a radiographer then moved into management and although earning good money It still didnt provide the type of life I wanted. I realised that I didnt want to slog away day after day until almost 70. I also knew that wealth doesnt give freedom as once money runs out you need to work. I joined a network marketing business and after 9 months I replaced my salary and left work. After 2 years ,I retired my husband and cleared mortgage and bought second home in Spain. i have now set up 11 passive income streams and earn roughly 60k a month. I have financial security and now get to enjoy life with my family. If you are hard working and have a vision you could easily do the same. Its hard graft at the start but you are working for your dream not trading your time for money. Good luck

swissmummy12345 · 16/07/2021 05:21

200k Swiss Francs a year (£160k) + bonus + shares. Pharmaceuticals.

I left UK HE because the money was so crap and Brexshit didn't help. We pay school leavers here more than professors make in the UK.

swissmummy12345 · 16/07/2021 05:31

@FloconDeNeige

I have to say that I don’t think I can come back to UK salaries now I’m established in Switzerland. Most other ex-pats of almost every nationality feel the same.

So you could always consider re-locating, OP!

Absolutely agree. I was told when I first moved here that working for 10 years here is like working for 30 at home. I will retire early at this rate.
Casiloco · 16/07/2021 07:18

Work as an adviser in financial services after leaving teaching. It's a "people" job contrary to many people's perceptions and I love working with my clients. I earn £50k salary but have also been able to build a capital value in my business, so that is a sizeable bonus which I will be receiving when I sell (which I am doing currently).

Marmaladee · 16/07/2021 07:49

I feel sad reading all these. I work really hard in homelessness prevention. Just spent lockdown getting rough sleepers homed. I also help out at a soup kitchen when I can. I earn £22,000. Why is my job worth so little?

thisplaceisweird · 16/07/2021 08:06

Unfortunately working hard doesn't mean you should get paid more

Most of these high earning jobs have required a degree, smart decisions, consistent performance, sacrifices and also a bit of right time right place and being the right person. I bet most of these people would consider themselves fair irreplaceable in their respective companies.

Most lower earning roles could be replaced in a minute and the skills and knowledge don't take too long to acquire

thebookworm1 · 16/07/2021 08:18

I changed careers from a very low-paying sector and ferry don’t work harder in this one.
It seems, however, that the skill set required for my current job is rare. We really struggle to recruit capable people to fill the vacancies, even at the more junior level. We can often get through several hundred candidates before finding one capable of passing the skills test… It’s supply and demand although it does feel weird as I found my previous career more demanding!

thebookworm1 · 16/07/2021 08:20

Sorry not sure what the word “ferry” is doing in there - I hate typing on my phone 😂

GrealishHairband · 16/07/2021 08:28

@scubadive I’ve done a few additional posts in the thread but I don’t want to give away my background too much. I do have a vocational degree and a masters although that isn’t required for the role but I’m sure helped. The degree is required for my specific job as is membership of my professional body but we do employ lay people to do the same role although many have a legal background.

GrealishHairband · 16/07/2021 08:32

@scubadive also I started off doing the vocational job that my degree led me to for many years. I nabbed a role in my organisation on a SE basis that gave me some real additional skills in terms of decision making and judgment calls. I then moved onto a different role in a different organisation doing investigations into my initial job role around things that went wrong and so when my current role came up I had the perfect blend of skills.

My current role is one I had spotted several years ago and thought ‘I’d love to do that’ and a lot of my moves since then have had this job in mind.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 16/07/2021 09:02

It’s not that you are worth little
It’s just the shitty way society and capitalism works

IF it’s any consolation i relate to it as

I pay 40% tax
This covers public services
I sell work
This pays for staff who also pay tax
My business also pays tax

So the capitalists do keep the economy flowing

Chig26 · 16/07/2021 09:22

Bit of green eye here, was in teaching then manager in industry, never got anywhere near that salary although I always gave 110% I felt, commitment etc. All the best in your quest and the future.

minimoomoos · 16/07/2021 09:33

@thisplaceisweird yes!! I don't understand how ppl don't get that to be honest. It's like everything...it's supply and demand!!

BBCdramaaddict · 16/07/2021 09:54

Paramedic, SE Took 10 years to get to over £50K

ImbarbaraB · 16/07/2021 09:57

I know a full time colleague is earning £100k

My full time salary would be half this but I work part time

I am more qualified for the higher paying role but because I’m part time I don’t get a look in

I think it’s about time part time staff aren’t automatically seen as worth less because they aren’t there as much
Often they are non sharing or fitting in a higher quality of work within the time

So many companies see it as quantity of quality and it needs to be the other way around

scubadive · 16/07/2021 09:59

@GrealishHairband i’m afraid Your posts are so cryptic I still have absurd no clue what your job is. Like none whatsoever.

Mamacita191 · 16/07/2021 10:18

Same. I read this board last night and felt rubbish. I get paid the same as you (although less as I’m part time) and I work in domestic abuse. Quite demotivating really as I’m late 20’s and reading some people on this board are early 30’s and earning that much! I have a degree in law as well (don’t want to be a lawyer though now). Wondering what I can do to progress.

Yellowgiraffe44 · 16/07/2021 10:21

GP earning £27k for 4 days lasting 10-11 hours but I only opted to work half days (which take me 10-11hours) as I spend too long with patients.
I’m now changing career to another profession in the NHS and will eventually be on 25k in 2-3 years but with less stress.

Dontphunkwithmyheart · 16/07/2021 10:23

@GrealishHairband oh I absolutely know what job you do I think. Grin You either work for the 3 letter place or the 4 letter one, my career path is the same as yours but not at 50k yet
