To ask what your job is if you earn £50k plus

Just that really!

I'm in a job that I fell into many years ago. Its OK but I'm bored. It's a professional job that many people would think earns about twice what it does. I'm on approx 30k (people are always shocked to learn this) and will be forever in this job (no real promotion open to me). Its a sector a LOT of people want to work in and in which some people will work for free. The result is we are actually paid very little - and people outside the sector are always shocked by this.

I'm considering a career change, but have no ideas what to. So if you're earning 50k plus sell me hour career. I have a degree, an MA and I'm sure lots of transferable skills.

That doest mean anything though, cities in the south for example are generally paid more than cities in the north

Two jobs, both part-time:
Clinical academic (Clinical Senior Lecturer pay scale) and GP.
Overall paid £72k for 27 hours per week, on average work more like 35 hours.
General Practice is absolutely brutal, I come home so exhausted I can barely function. It was always hard, but it wasn't like this 15 years ago when I went into it.

DH is a full time NHS Hospital Consultant on £105k after 14 years medical training and 10 years as a consultant, no private work or extra sessions but some leadership responsibilities and CEAs. Loves his job.

And no, if I had my time again, I wouldn't be a GP. I would do hospital medicine in a speciality that didn't do acute medical 'take' (general admissions).

JustAnotherOldMan · 15/07/2021 19:01

IT teamleader 60k with bonus, outside London

fluffysocksgoodbookwine · 15/07/2021 19:02

Actually no, I take that back. I loved being a GP for years. I would love to get back to a workload where we could actually make a difference and be there for people, like we used to. I'm working very hard to help train/recruit more GPs, and I do still believe it's a privilege to be a person's GP.
It's just been a very hard couple of years!

Product Designer & Manufacturer, South East, £120k.

Oochiewalla · 15/07/2021 19:14

Jewellery sales professional. I work part time now but basic salary for full time works out to be 40k plus 20k commission.

PiccalilliChilli · 15/07/2021 19:21

Friend of ours is a quantity surveyor. Six figures, tho won't be specific.
Another friend is a tube train driver. Drivers of trains, either light rail, national rail, or freight get paid very well.

ejhhhhh · 15/07/2021 19:22

Teacher, but top of the upper pay scale and in London, outside London it's a bit less. Usually takes at least 8 years to get that salary without responsibility but there's a fair few jobs that come with responsibility payments in teaching. My OH is a data scientist, he trained as an accountant first and was earning £50k outside of London relatively quickly. Chartered accountancy is a reasonable route to a decent salary outside of London imo.

Lindylindyloo · 15/07/2021 19:23

If it’s in media then PR or marketing. Both pay better

IknowThisIsRidiculous · 15/07/2021 19:24

Susannahmoody · 15/07/2021 19:33

Great thread 👍

TalbotAMan · 15/07/2021 19:37

If I was still full time - I'm now part-time on the way to retirement - I'd be just a little over £50k as a Senior Lecturer in a post-92 (ie ex polytechnic) university.

riceuten · 15/07/2021 19:39

Local government officer, dealing with schools.

TalbotAMan · 15/07/2021 19:39

Should add that I'm shortly technically retiring for, and the pension and part-time consultancy will (hopefully) actually increase what I make by quite a bit compared with the full time salary I used to be on!

Newgirls · 15/07/2021 19:42

Publishing - but it took a looong time to get to that.

Mimi40 · 15/07/2021 19:47

Plenty of opportunities to progress in HE. There are central administrative roles relating to learning and teaching and also academic/researcher development roles which would use your skills, and are sometimes on academic contracts. Might not be 50K instantly but there are opportunities depending on what you want from a career.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 15/07/2021 19:48

@sunshinegirl28

Ofsted inspector!
Social care or education? I’d love to be a social care inspector as I’ve worked in jobs related to social care my whole career but never qualified as a social worker which rules me out Sad
FuzzyPuffling · 15/07/2021 19:51

Director of a national charity based in London. Just scraped past the £50K mark after 27 years experience.
