To ask what your job is if you earn £50k plus

Just that really!

I'm in a job that I fell into many years ago. Its OK but I'm bored. It's a professional job that many people would think earns about twice what it does. I'm on approx 30k (people are always shocked to learn this) and will be forever in this job (no real promotion open to me). Its a sector a LOT of people want to work in and in which some people will work for free. The result is we are actually paid very little - and people outside the sector are always shocked by this.

I'm considering a career change, but have no ideas what to. So if you're earning 50k plus sell me hour career. I have a degree, an MA and I'm sure lots of transferable skills.

Hospital consultant and do some extra work for my trust. I’m 43 and earn about £150k.

Someone earlier asked if medicine is a good career in 30s/40s and I would say definitely yes, but the first few years are awful!!!

Kteeb1 · 15/07/2021 17:38

IT operations program director. Global role, lots of hours, lots of travel.

No degree, but 20+ years in the industry

Diva66 · 15/07/2021 17:43

I’m a software developer. I’m very very good at it.

Fieldday · 15/07/2021 17:43

I’m on that as a secondary English teacher in a London private school, 3 years experience (but they did reward my previous career experience as a management consultant). No responsibility points. I expect that will rise relatively quickly with responsibility points, but I think it will cap at about £65k in middle management unless I want to move into senior leadership.

wooo69 · 15/07/2021 17:43

I am similar to you on £30k ish after almost 29 years. I have a BA but it’s not necessary for my role. We don’t have promotions, you have to apply for any job you are interested in that comes up. I did work in the public sector but was TUPE’d in 2003. Our salary and terms still fall in line with public sector so we will get 1.5% increase this year and that is more than we expected.

Kayte16 · 15/07/2021 17:43

I’m a senior national account manager (sales) for a toy company and earn over £60k before bonus - over 10 years experience though

accentdusoleil · 15/07/2021 17:43

@Wrotten what qualifications did you do? CIPs?

Idogiveadamn · 15/07/2021 17:44

Solicitor. Corporate (mergers and acquisitions)London magic circle. $220k plus bonuses. Love my job, never done anything but be a lawyer. Wouldn't suit everyone, long hours.

Returnofthemagpie · 15/07/2021 17:44

City lawyer, earning 7 figures in dollars. I live very modestly, as if I were still on my starting salary of £35k. I never adjusted to the salary or have time to spend it. I hope you find a job that you enjoy, OP.

TheSpanishApartment · 15/07/2021 17:51

@CareerInspirationRequired I have a feeling we are in the same profession. I do earn over £50k but I am quite senior and work in London. There are very very few jobs around and it is super competitive. I also feel like I have reached a ceiling and would like to retrain, but need to retain my salary. Also before this I was an accountant and I absolutely loathed that, even though it was more lucrative. In current job I am just bored rather than actively hating every minute.

Mummyto2rugrats · 15/07/2021 17:51

Not there yet but fingers crossed soon as sitting my chartership in the next year, my role is QS I retrained whilst working FT because as much as I loved the role I was in as a planning manager my husband who was the level below my earnt more and with OT he is on over £50k.

My role wage depends on if consulting or contractors QS and whether a large or small firm best decision I made because I can definitely increase my earning potential year on year when I couldn't before

Good luck with your choice

CauliflowerBalti · 15/07/2021 17:52

I work in advertising and earn more than £50k. Your skills would stand you in good stead to be a planner. Mastering and unearthing customer insights, overlaying those against the cultural landscape, and using the two combined to develop a creative strategy to influence that audience to buy or do something. It’s a combination of research, distilling information and a bit of cultural magic.

Tusue · 15/07/2021 17:53

Hell fire there’s some big earners out there. 🙀
Admit to being a bit envious 😼
BUT I am a nurse who will NEVER earn that much money but-honestly- being happy and satisfied with your work is everything in working life.
I could maybe earn more elsewhere but I like my job and I like the people I work with.
Wouldn’t swap it 🤔 well ok I would for a lottery win !
