To ask what your job is if you earn £50k plus

Just that really!

I'm in a job that I fell into many years ago. Its OK but I'm bored. It's a professional job that many people would think earns about twice what it does. I'm on approx 30k (people are always shocked to learn this) and will be forever in this job (no real promotion open to me). Its a sector a LOT of people want to work in and in which some people will work for free. The result is we are actually paid very little - and people outside the sector are always shocked by this.

I'm considering a career change, but have no ideas what to. So if you're earning 50k plus sell me hour career. I have a degree, an MA and I'm sure lots of transferable skills.

Grants Manager for a private foundation (like Bill and Melinda Gates but it's not them). It essentially involves finding non-profit organisations that meet our funding criteria (we don't accept cold applications), understanding their strategy, establishing their needs and then managing the funding process, including metric setting etc. It's very interesting and rewarding.

pantheistsboots · 14/07/2021 12:03

Freelance translator, income varies but £80k+. It's taken a while to build up to that, mind!

DH web developer on £95k.

littlepieces · 14/07/2021 12:07

@BananaHammock23 How do you find the freelance work? Is it just the same clients?

f0stercarer · 14/07/2021 12:08

foster carer. The hours can be long ! More of a lifestyle than a job but it is what pays the mortgage, the bills and the holidays.

TonkinLenkicks · 14/07/2021 12:10

rainbowfairylights · 14/07/2021 12:30

I'm not earning it yet but I'm a Producer working across film & theatre and we have capacity to earn way over £50k. Takes a while to get there though!

Laaaaa · 14/07/2021 12:33

Mental health nurse. 35k (been here years) top up with bank and agency
Easy 60k

WaterAndTheWild · 14/07/2021 12:35

Sub editor - £54k - not a huge amount but I have very relaxed colleagues and interesting work.. Working from home means I'm able to do my mysterious hobbies for a few hours a day too, and take the kids to school/pick them up/ferry them to things.

It's a good balance

evtheria · 14/07/2021 12:36

@Insert1x20p That sounds fascinating, and like a fairy godmother of sorts!

EggsEggsEggs · 14/07/2021 12:36

Freelance medical writer making around £110-120 K per year. Based in a major city in the North.

I have a PhD and postdoctoral experience in cancer research plus spent almost 10 years working in an agency prior to going freelance.

It’s been a long hard slog at times, but now only working normal full time hours.

If you have a science background and an aptitude for writing, there is plenty of work in this field.

midsomermurderess · 14/07/2021 12:42

These threads are nonsensical. It's not just the job, it's the sector, it's the region, qualifications, experience, demand for a certain skill set. Random people saying 'solicitor' etc' is pretty meaningless.

MamaEs · 14/07/2021 12:42

Senior civil servant

EvilPea · 14/07/2021 12:49

Im looking at these jobs thinking (of the few I could do) how on earth do you get started in them. i mean, if i sent my CV in i would get laughed at. I managed to entirely blag my last roles pay as i wasn't bothered about taking it or not, but I was young and cocky as i knew i was the best. But it wasn't compatible with children so the well paid job and the confidence has long gone!!

Moonlight1972 · 14/07/2021 12:49

I've a few friends & acquaintances that are doctors. One is in the SE and is certainly on more than £60k, but her hours are intense. Another qualified and moved abroad, where she could command a higher salary because starting salaries for a newly qualified professional in the UK were shockingly low.

For my part both DH and I are on more than £50k; I'm head of marketing for an environmental consultancy -- it's not the sector that drives the pay, it's the technical skills & ability to make money for the company that create the opportunity. DH is a software engineer. We live about 50 miles from the nearest large city but neither of us works there, so our pay isn't being given a boost from that proximity.

@21Bee I’m a bogo “Commercial” surveyor Grin worked in general practice, now gone in house.

Lololol, you’ve just made me remember a daft thing that once happened. I was describing a a surveyor at Savills to another property person. I was trying to help narrow down the person I was describing by including his department.

Me: “do you know * at Savills? He’s Rural”.

Them: “oh yes! Oh yes, I agree, he is rather rural. Those trousers…”
