DH is searching the house all stressed and grumpy because he can't find the right battery and he only bought some a few days ago. We have a box for putting batteries in as I don't was fed up of finding loads of AAA batteries in every draw and cupboard. But DH still just shoves stuff just anywhere. I'm biding my time before I say yet again "If you put it in the right place you would be able to find it". He's 61, shouldn't he have learned by now?
I have been known to pick his junk up and put it in his side of the bed.

I dont think you meant to be funny but this made me laugh! No advise but after almost 20 years with mine I would say he has finally learned where to put and find batteries which is indeed that battery box!

Ahhhhh this is so familiar! I have ADD (not yet diagnosed but currently being assessed so highly likely) and I am very prone to misplacing/losing stuff unless I put it away immediately in a dedicated place. Marie Kondo method was a godsend! "Like" things are stored together because you are more likely to use them together. i.e. Paint and paintbrushes, batteries and instruction manuals. This is one of my biggest coping mechanisms that allows me to live a functional life.

My neurotypical husband however just throws random things in random drawers/cupboards. I appreciate the tidiness but when I open one and it's all a mixture of drinks coasters, old CDs, parking permit booklets, face masks, unopened post and screwdrivers it gives me the heebie geebies. He often fails to find things but isn't bothered, he just buys more!

I needed batteries recently. Soon to be ex recently moved out. Went to the battery cubby. Went through about 20 batteries trying to find a working pair because he’s also been putting used ones back away in there instead of in the pot I take to the recycling.

We have a desk and 2 large chests of drawers where all things that are important but not needed on a daily basis are stored. Think batteries, the bit you stick on the bicycle pump to adjust for different tyres, measuring tape, candles and matches, sewing kit, house deeds, wills, birth certificates...... et cetera..... etc.

The system has been in place for at least 2 decades, but I still get asked 'where is ...?'

FlowerArranger · 13/07/2021 09:44

Just to add: ALL the drawers are labelled with their contents!!

SheABitSpicyToday · 13/07/2021 09:45

Some people never learn this. My husband and kids are useless and can never find anything.

MrsExpo · 13/07/2021 09:49

Are you married to my DH OP?

We too have a large plastic box with the word Batteries written clearly on the lid, which has lived in the same cupboard for 20 years .... but can my DH find a battery when he needs one? Nope .....

When my partner and I moved in together, we condensed two large houses into one and then we renovated and built an extension. During this time, he would regularly say he didn’t know where anything was because I had put things away but if he had put things away, he would know where they were.

He has now unpacked and sorted out the garage (and I’ve made labels for boxes and shelves so I know where things are). He still comes to me to say “I can’t find…” and I’ll tell him where it is!

DH does that with socks. Convo goes:

Him: when your us Sainsbury's can you pick up some socks. I'm getting low.
Me: You have a drawer full
Him: but they all have holes/shrunk/fall down
