To ask why Brits drink instant coffee?

I’m an American and am genuinely curious. Every British TV show and article I’ve seen so far seems to imply that instant coffee is far more popular than whole or ground beans. Is it too nosy to ask why?

It is because making teabag tea and instant coffee are basically the same process - I go into the kitchen from my desk and automatically switch the kettle on multiple times a day before I decide which of the two hot drinks I'm going to have, I usually only decide when I have the mug etc and open the cupboard to get the packet/jar down.
The two slightly caffeinated warm brown office-break filler drinks are totally different in my mind from "proper tea" (with saucers, tea leaves from a caddy, strainers etc) or "proper coffee" (probably made with beans and a press). They are all also a different thing in my mind to a "machine coffee" Starbucks mocha etc, which is more of a dessert.

I don’t - can’t stand the stuff!
