I was having spring clean and came across some stuff, so being a good eco nut i poste don freecycle.
One item was 2 craft kits for adults. I got tons of emails but thought i would give to first polite person.
Told said lady she could have kits, can she pick up this afternoon? Yes all fine.

Till I find out......... she lives 20 miles away in another town! grrrr. I wanted to tell her no after that but didnt.
Am I the only one that think freecycle should be local and not be used by people that live so far away and use tons of petrol to get items???

i don't mind, because it keeps items out of the landfill.

I am very lucky with my freecycle the moderator had what I asked for and after having had an awful week where I cou;dn't get to her - she is bringing my items over tomorrow morning

Perhaps she is over your way for another reason?

If it bothers you, ask where people are before deciding who gets things.

belgo · 25/11/2007 08:19

if you thik she would apreciate having them, let her have them.

lisad123 · 25/11/2007 08:58

She wasnt over my way for any reason and they wouldnt have gone in landfil as I have about 10 requests for this item.
I gave them to her anyway, but maybe your right will ask where people are next time.

I think it depends where you live down here in deepest darkest Dorset, the freecycle covers from one end of Dorset to another and you could travel further than that! Although I dont think I would personally travel that far for a craft kit, although did just for a wardrobe that DDIL was given.

Agree with shosh, we live in Devon and there are no freecycle groups between Plymouth and Exeter which are about 50 miles apart so you will always have to travel some distance to get stuff!

You did the right thing by giving it to the person who asked first and she must have really wanted it to go to the effort.

You can't check the green credentials of every person you give to, so I think deciding only to give to people in the same town, while seeming a good idea in priniciple is a bit unfair. It may also backfire on you if you have items to give that nobody local to you wants and someone from another town does.

Ineedacleaner · 26/11/2007 08:10

Agree with above. I live in a place where 20 miles away is the toen we go shopping in, we do have a local freecycle but it does cover a HUGE area so a lot of people join the local towns one as well.
ALso because of where I live I suppose I also see 20 miles as still kind of within my locality so doesn't seem like such a big deal.

TBH as long as I get rid of my stuff I am not really bothered where they come from to get it.
