How much notice to give?

I’ve been in a role for 8 weeks. It’s night shifts and just not for me at all, I really regret taking it. Feel like a failure leaving after 8 weeks but I know my health is more important.

Anyway I have no contract or document given to me by the manager. I’ve just heard from other staff that the first 12 weeks is probation. I do have another job lined up fortunately, and a second job through an agency that I could do full time if needed.

Would you say a week’s notice is ok? Would like to never go back if I could but obviously can’t do that.

Gov.uk says a week but what grounds would the company have to try and make me stay longer?

I'd give them a week

Shmithecat2 · 12/07/2021 07:58

No, they wouldn't. A week is fine.

MiniTheMinx · 12/07/2021 07:58

Just give them a week, put it in writing so they don't try to negotiate or string it out.

SarahBellam · 12/07/2021 07:59

If they haven’t given you a contract you can walk today. Otherwise a week will be plenty.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 12/07/2021 07:59

Yes, a week is fine. 2 max. I think you would find that if they didn't want you, they would absolutely not give more than a week and plenty of places would simply tell you not to come back the next day.

Drovememad · 12/07/2021 08:00

A week is ample.

Absolutelynot123 · 12/07/2021 08:01

Yeah for sure. If they didn’t want me or others there anymore they could sack us on the spot. They certainly wouldn’t give a week’s notice.
I don’t have a contract but I will give a week, don’t want to leave the other colleagues in difficulty.

Um... speak to your manager?

Absolutelynot123 · 12/07/2021 08:06

She’s off atm, haven’t timed it well. I’ll just give a week. It’s so tempting to give a week and then just ring in sick and do my other job full time but that would make me a shit person.

Legally you’re required to give a weeks notice (it doesn’t matter whether you have a written contract) so a week is exactly right.

They have no grounds to ask you to stay longer if they didn’t give you a contract with a longer notice period.

MouldyPotato · 12/07/2021 09:12

They might offer you the chance to leave immediately if you're lucky.

Absolutelynot123 · 12/07/2021 10:38

Fingers crossed they do. I think the only reason they will want me to stay is to ensure they have adequate shift cover for this week.
