To Want To Know Where To Buy A Nice School Bag?

DD is starting reception in September 😭 I really want to kit her out with a lovely school bag and shoes etc and was wondering where do you actually buy nice little girls school bags? I’ve seen that Smiggle shop in town but it seems really expensive for quite tacky looking bits to be honest! Where’s the go to place?! (Yes I know I’m overthinking what school bag to get a 4yr old, I’ll be honest I was never the kid with the cool gear when I was younger so just want it to be different for DD)
Thanks!

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a great school bag for your DC, we’ve recently updated our best school bags page with lots of options, as bought, tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

I bought my daughter a smiggle bag for reception and within a few weeks it started to rip and is now in heck of a mess.
When she started school nursery, I bought her a Disney princess oilcloth type one and it’s still in fab condition. She uses it again now that the smiggle one is battered.

She has a Cath Kidston one for September.

Sorry that should have read an oilcloth Disney princess bag from M&S.

M&S do lovely 'nursery size' backpacks. We got it for our DS & DD starting school in August. It's a brilliant size and has matching lunchbox. Girls options were princesses, unicorns (DD choice) or very lovely dinosaurs which was a close 2nd pick. Quality feels very good also

Cath Kidston ones are cute for little ones in reception and they have a sale on atm. My DD (80 had Cath Kidston ones for ages and now has a Smiggle one because all the preteens love them, but the CK ones are much cuter! They don't need much stuff at Reception age tbh so a small backpack is fine for the first year or so - just water bottle and extra cardi and summer hat to pack.

Every school round here has school branded book bags for YR to Y2

Rucksacks get in the way as they take up too much room

Hankunamatata · 11/07/2021 22:41

Ours only have book bags for first 3 years which you buy from the school

Hankunamatata · 11/07/2021 22:44

Smiggles website have a sale on lunch bags at the mo. My friend bemoaned the fact her daughter picked a pink sparkly monstrosity Grin but at least it was cheap

Remember that R-Y2 get free infant lunches, so you won't need a lunchbox unless your child won't eat them.
