Staycation or holiday?

Ok, so it's not a big aibu and yes I've got better things to spend my time thinking about. However...
Since covid ppl keep talking about what they're going to do on their staycation this year. In my mind that means staying at home and going on day trips. If you're going on holiday in the UK that's going on holiday!

Don't know why it's bugging me. Probably because for years we haven't been able to afford a holiday and had a staycation and the people now saying it are the poor rich ppl having to slum it in the UK for their hol rather than some fancy pants destination.

Anyway, it's bugging me, it shouldn't be so I'm ranting here!

I've ranted for a number of years about (what I see as) the incorrect use of the term 'staycation'. I've holidayed in the UK for the last ten years, none of those were staycations, they were all holidays/vacations. Last year, tied to the house by Covid restrictions, we had a staycation of being at home but taking daytrips out.

But what can you do? Language evolves, and this one is evolving against my personal opinion.

It is a bloody holiday, staycation drives me up the wall! I don't even know where it popped up from I think I peaked when This Morning had a staycation fashion itemAngry

I haven't been abroadsince 2006, but have had a holiday every year. My family didn't go abroad until I was 11, but we had a holiday every year.
For me, a holiday is leaving your own home and staying somewhere else.
A staycation is staying (the clue is in the name) in your own home but behaving as if you are on holiday eg. Day trips out, barbecues, meals out etc.

Yes, it's annoying. A 'staycation' (which is a horrible term anyway) is when you literally stay at home and relax and don't have to work. I actually think it's really classist to assume that only a proper holiday is abroad (I say this as someone who is very middle class and travels abroad a lot in normal times). Being able to go to Spain or Greece or the Caribbean or wherever every year is pretty privileged. We certainly didn't do that, ever, when I was growing up. I can remember going abroad twice ever as a child (and we were plenty financially comfortable).

We've actually never had a family holiday abroad (barring once we travelled to visit family in another country, but it wasn't a 'holiday' like in a resort, on the beach, doing activities every day). Dc have been individually on short trips with me when I've gone abroad, but our annual holidays are always in the UK and they're lovely and I'm sure less than everyone's package holidays (we stay really nice places, I don't quite understand how people end up saying they spend so much on UK holidays). But yes, it's quite strange. Certainly in our circles people often holiday in the UK. Some do go abroad, but big holidays are usually in the UK. It's only been because of COVID that I've realised that most people don't do that.

Stay... remain at home
Vacate...leave home.

Millions of people have holidays in the country they reside in. Always have done.

I might be slightly bitter though as we've priced out of our normal UK holiday this year...

Don’t be jealous OP, many people are used to going away and now can’t without major hassle- look U.K. holidays would be great if you could rely on the weather but you can’t do you spend hundreds to be rained on- it sucks!
I go abroad usually however people who go on more expensive holidays probably look down their noses at mine- does it matter?

Beamur · 11/07/2021 10:00

I love the staycation enthusiasm! I don't really care if it means having a home based break or going away but staying in the UK.
It's a nice way of making a break feel a bit more of an event.

grafittiartist · 11/07/2021 10:02

Thank you!!!
If staycations are in the uk, then I've not been on holiday fir years- which is not true.
Staycation= home/ own city
Holiday= journey and new keys!!

Katefoster · 11/07/2021 10:04

This annoys me too. A staycation is having AL and staying at home go out etc but come home. Anywhere that you're not sleeping in your own bed is a holiday. I find it a reallt rude phrase

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 11/07/2021 10:10

Thing is I don't particularly care what ppl call it's more that it's usually said in context of 'poor us, we have to not go on holiday'. Just makes me want to scream 'check your privilege' (although I hate that phrase too!). I think it's because these same ppl bang on about climate change and spend loads buying eco products but cant give up their foreign holiday. Just feels hypocritical. (Course I could be harbouring unrealised jealousy...!Smile)
