Female sports clothing is rubbish. AIBU to wear male?

Aibu to wear make sports clothing?

Female tops are strapped and insubstantial, stretch-marks- revealing and draughty.

Male tops are far more substantial, less draughty and a better range of colours and designs.

Female leggings are tight, hot and revealing. Make football shorts are comfortable, cool, cheaper and have pockets.

Male running shoes come in more sizes and a wider range of widths.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable, but every single shop assistant I have spoken to this morning has tried to steer me towards female clothing.

I don’t want to play sport in skin tight leggings looking like I have wound a reel of shocking pink string around my top half

YANBU I started wearing my husbands running T-shirt’s and never looked back!

HerrenaHarridan · 10/07/2021 14:15

Wear whatever you like

Some people will think you’re weird

That’s their problem

Happy36 · 10/07/2021 14:16

Bought men's trainers once in a pickle with no other alternative, same brand as I always use, cheaper and superior.

aiwblam · 10/07/2021 14:16

I'd shop online. There's plenty of nice stuff that's cut for women that isn't pink and stringy. I'm 6ft so I've had to wear plenty of men's stuff over the years and where possible I get women's stuff. It often has a lighter feel and is less boxy. There's plenty of black stuff, which is usually what I get.

I wouldn't wear shoes designed for men unless you have pretty wide feet.

Happy36 · 10/07/2021 14:16

Have often said trainers have no need to be sold in male/female, just according to foot shape and usage.

EdinaMonsoon · 10/07/2021 14:18

YANBU but whilst I agree that there are lots of tight leggings/strappy tops as you describe, there are also plenty of women's sportswear items which do fit your needs. You just need to find the right brand. Also most men's shorts are cut to sit on the hips (but classed as men's waists) and are often not deep enough in the rise to properly fit a woman. Not without substantial camel toe/thrush issues!

EllaBlaire · 10/07/2021 14:18

I also enjoy men’s pyjama bottoms.. they are thicker and have pockets!

NotJustAnyOldDog · 10/07/2021 14:18

All of my female sports clothing is loose, non revealing and has pockets. Perhaps you are looking in the wrong places.

trilbydoll · 10/07/2021 14:19

For me, leggings / shorts need to be fitted, otherwise they fall down, chafe etc. But I agree men's tops are far preferable, they are longer and more comfortable.

0None0 · 10/07/2021 14:19

Where are you buying from?

Wear what you want.

Were you asking fir advice? In which case they probably only have feedback from men/women who have reviewed or fed back about the stuff they have bought so couldn't honestly answer on the specific situation.

Did you just say " no thanks these are fine " ?

Yanbu unreasonable to wear whatever you want if it fits you. Might also be worth leaving a review on the products you tried that weren't any good and maybe researchers will take it into account when designing the womens range...who knows...

Meh go ahead who cares. I wear my partners hoodies all the time, they are better than the thin crappy ones made for women with tiny pockets that usually have no zips.

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 14:21

Dd wears mens tops but has loose baggy running shorts designed for women I think they are Ron Hill ones

EastWestWhosBest · 10/07/2021 14:22

Wear what you like but I get my running tops from M&S. They aren’t strappy or short.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 10/07/2021 14:23

You're buying from the wrong places! You know that female football shorts exist?

thecognoscenti · 10/07/2021 14:24

YANBU! I hate the assumption that I want to wear a skintight vest. I want a looser t shirt please! Leggings I'm ok with but I struggle with the top half.

ThursdayWeld · 10/07/2021 14:24

You're not wrong. I've just bought some swimming shorts. Who decreed that women have to swim in bottoms that are high cut?!

DukeofEarlGrey · 10/07/2021 14:24

I always buy men’s trainers as I have big wide feet and women’s never come up large enough... However, I also have big boobs and need many layers of ladies’ Lycra sports bras / tops to provide enough support.

Horses for courses though, YANBU in any way and I think your attitude is great.

Deux · 10/07/2021 14:31

I like Underarmour. They’ve got lots of plain colours and you can filter according to fit. I often find some women’s sports clothes are cut too tight under the arm though, well on me at least.

wordsareveryunnecessary · 10/07/2021 14:34

Ds has climbing lessons. The men wear comfortable climbing trousers and t shirts or loose vests. The women wear tight figure hugging leggings and tops that look like bras. Why??

candycane222 · 10/07/2021 14:38

I often end up buying mens kit because some outlets ( eg Wiggle) only seem to carry stock up to size 14, which gives me the absolute rage AngryAngry

NeedNewKnees · 10/07/2021 14:42

Do you subscribe to CCP's Invisible Women newsletter? She's highlighted some better designed sports wear recently (and also gardening equipment, which was of more interest to me)

MrsToothyBitch · 10/07/2021 14:42

YANBU. I have discovered men's coats. Go with what works for you. My gym gear is H&M, comfy and not too revealing or pinchy though, if it helps Smile

Camomila · 10/07/2021 14:50

Just wear whatever you find comfier.
I prefer women's sports clothing myself because I don't like all the extra fabric flapping about in looser fitting sports stuff (especially for yoga, I don't want my top to float up and flash people).
