to ask if anyone has ever had a BBC Complaint upheld?

Nachorancho · 09/07/2021 20:46

Just that really and this is really not intended to be a "BBC bashing" thread.

On the odd (less than ten over past six/seven years) occasions I have raised a complaint it has always been dismissed and the reasoning is always the same: "we have acknowledged what you say but we think you are wrong (to paraphrase)"

So my question is has anyone ever made a complaint and the BBC have held their hands up and said "yes I think to are right OP"?
**@Whogotdakeystomabeamer

*Ned Flander's (The Simpsons) favourite pastime is complaining to TV Channels"

Yup am aware - and your point is?

It's not a pastime - this is a genuine query as other PP would indicate

Have you never made a comment/remark/complaint/observation @Whogotdakeystomabeamer re anything??
Imagine funding something that makes you complain that often...

Stop using it and stop funding it - problem solved.

I complained about the persistent use of the phrase 'child porn' in several different articles on the BBC website.

The response was hugely disappointing, they basically justified it as easier to understand and pithier than saying 'images of child sexual abuse' and they continued to use the phrase for quite a while afterwards.

Imagine being so narrowminded to think that you can't criticise something without also wishing to "defund" it!

Fair enough, stop reading it then, you are wasting your life complaining about something that evidently isn't going to change....just do what I do, drink a butt load of wine and you will find you won't be offended by anything ever again Wink

Twitchynose · 09/07/2021 22:20

I complained about an article on their news website that implied that reusable sanitary products caused infections, whilst the research they linked to didn’t say that at all. They agreed it was wrong and amended the article.

Well yeah you’re right... except I complained and they sent me an apology and changed the offensive headline!
housecoat1968 · 09/07/2021 22:25

No - they always tell me why I'm wrong but that they will put it in the log.

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2021 22:35

No it has to be 'discusted'. That's the thing.

Quaggars · 09/07/2021 22:39

@wardribe I know, my spelling was intentional Grin

StrawberrySundayz · 09/07/2021 22:47

Dear BBC

Why oh why must you continue doing something I don’t agree with.

Yours,

SorryAuntLydia · 09/07/2021 22:51

@Nachorancho I’ve had a complaint upheld and as a result an edit made.

This was a BBC Teach resource for RSE which told primary school children that being disrespectful to gender-variant identifying people was an offence punishable by a prison sentence. Not surprisingly when the production team consulted their legal team they were forced to agree this was incorrect and remove this section of the film.

JetBlackSteed · 09/07/2021 22:53

No, I complained once about Radio 1 breakfast show. The stand in DJ (I think scott mills) was having a very adult joke at 7 am involving cucumber and Nutella. I complained because my young DS (5 yo) was also listening and didn't get the jokes, obv, and I said it was inappropriate. I was told I was not their target audience what with being in my late 30's and bog off listen somewhere else. They later sent out a survey to gauge the age of their listeners lol.

Taliskerskye · 09/07/2021 22:53

@SorryAuntLydia
No way! They said that

ListenToChickens · 09/07/2021 22:55

less than ten over past six/seven years

It's 'fewer than ten'.
I feel a letter coming on...

alittlefishy · 09/07/2021 23:01

I work in comms for a big famous not for profit organisation and, it is always worth complaining. Complaints are noted and reported and they do cause internal angst. Even if your response is a brush off - it's noted and can cause things to change.

goose1964 · 09/07/2021 23:05

I had one upheld, it was a programme with incessant swearing before the watershed. They admitted they'd programme should have been shown later.

SorryAuntLydia · 09/07/2021 23:06

@Taliskerskye is your disbelief related to the existence of the original version or the fact they changed it??? I can assure you that both are true.

Eylis · 09/07/2021 23:07

I always wondered who the people are that actually complains to ofcom about being offended...turns out it's mumsnetters

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2021 23:08

I think i complained to Ofcom once. About Kay Burley over her April Jones comments. But that's it. And nothing happened.

AlanThePig · 09/07/2021 23:10

I complained about the digital BBC news on Alexa. Some news stories start with low music in the background that rises as the story progresses. It’s not needed at all and is like a beep. I’m partly deaf and struggle to distinguish sounds so I really struggled with these type of stories as the music drowned out the speech and I asked if it were possible to just read the news without the music behind it.
They basically told me to turn up the volume.
