AIBU to spend £20k+ on a garden office?

We need an extra room as DH is going to be full time WFH from now on. At the moment he's in the spare bedroom but it's not very big and there's a lot of background noise when the kids are home. We don't want to turn the spare room into an office as MIL is in poor health and we like to have her stay with us for her safety (and our sanity!) when she's going through a bad patch.

We've looked at moving but would be spending £150k to get the same sort of living space elsewhere with an extra room. We live in a large 4 bed semi so we'd have to upsize to a detached.

We've had a quote on a composite garden room. It really is beautiful-all insulted and totally maintenance free but it's coming in at just over £20k Shock We can afford it but I'm totally torn as it seems such a lot of money to spend on what is essentially a posh shed! But we've looked at the cheaper timber options and are concerned about security, insulation and maintenance.

So AIBU to spend this on a garden office? Has anyone else done it and have good or bad experiences? Help me decide please!!

Yanbu. My house was valued at 225k by an estate agent. Another estate agent valued it at 265k. Price difference was due to second agent identifying my converted garage as an office. He said it's a massive selling point, (of course that may change in the future.)

My husbands moving in present was a shepherds hut as his office. It’s rather sweet and he loves working out there, with its fire lit and the dog curled up at his feet. It wasn’t quite £20k, but it felt like a lot of money at the time. As happens, it has been used daily and was money well spent.

I think it's a no-brainer for more space, and much less hassle than having an extension or loft or garage conversion.

We used Booth's garden studios and ours cost £13K (they can come in cheaper than that, but we had extra windows and it was one size up from their smallest). £20K sounds quite a lot - is it a very big one that can also be used eg as a games room?

@igelkott2021 would you recommend booths? I'm looking at them now as desperately need extra space to work once I come off mat leave.

Zombie thread, but since it showed up today @SpeckledFrogsLog did you go ahead with this?

LookItsMeAgain · 22/08/2022 07:56

I was going to come on to this thread and say "Go for it" except as I was reading it, I realised that I had already said that! 😆
A terrible sense of deja vu going on here!!!
I can completely understand why that woman replied to her own thread about the buggy now 😂

I'd love to know if you went ahead and got your garden office @SpeckledFrogsLog ?

We are thinking of doing the same so am interested in people's experiences

Do. It. Above is also note to self. We are in a very similar position.

We didn't! As it happened I got another job which meant I was office based plus DS1 decided he's going to uni this year so we didn't need the extra space after all that! I'm pleased we didn't invest all that money as we'd have ended up with a garden office and two spare bedrooms!

Oops! Should have said that I used to be SpeckledFrogs Grin

A friend got one, and it is bloody amazing! It's an office/sanctuary space/cool space for the kids.
