I am regretting my 3 year old son’s name

I really wish we hadn’t called him what we have. I always liked the name, since I was young.
But now it’s become hugely popular and it’s lost its “charm” in my opinion, the charm I saw in it when I was younger.
He’s 3 years old, so we can’t change it.
I’m upset that it has a bit of a reputation now, when before it was a more unusual name to hear.

What do you do if you feel like this? I guess I’ve just got to suck it up really! As we can hardly change it at this stage in his life.

I agree it’s been popular for ages- when we went on holiday 3 years ago every single little boy on the plane was called Archie!

It is a cute name though, and it makes me think of Archie comics.

It’s the new Alfie if that makes sense?

At least it isn’t a horrible unpronounceable name, he can wear it well and it is no different to being Matthew, Adam or Thomas in the 90s- there were 5 of each in my school but they are still nice names.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 09/07/2021 08:46

Archie is a great name. If he's only 3 it was already very popular for years before he was born. My DS is 16 and it was popular when he was born.

Tealbutterfly · 09/07/2021 08:47

His middle name is William

@Tealbutterfly

His name is Archie. I always liked the name when watching Monarch of the Glen as a teenager. My mum used to like watching Hornblower (the historical nautical drama series) and there was an Archie in that too. I thought it was unusual and liked how it sounded. It’s also a Scottish name and both me and my DP have Scottish ancestry/family connections.
FWIW, I think that Archie is a lovely name!
Conchitastrawberry · 09/07/2021 08:48

It’s a lovely name. When I named my son over 20 years ago no one liked the name we’d chosen. I’d loved it since I was a teenager myself. Now it’s really popular. I know lots of younger children with the same name. I don’t know any his age though.

Saidtoomuch · 09/07/2021 08:51

Archie is a lovely name, how could you not like it? It was on my shortlist 15 years ago.

elevenses75 · 09/07/2021 08:52

What’s wrong with Archie? It’s a nice name?
Many of them here in Scotland where I am it’s quite popular and I didn’t even remember that Harry and Meghan used it. It’s your sons name he’ll make it his own as I’m sure he probably already has. My youngest has a name I’m not keen on I wish I’d been stronger when he was born sadly I wasn’t,
And it’s his name now.

Aldidl · 09/07/2021 08:54

I guessed Archie from your OP! Just one of those things I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️ I bet if you speak to some other Archie parents they might feel the same! I hope you can smile about it in a couple of years Smile

HavfrueDenizKisi · 09/07/2021 08:55

I knew it was Archie before you said. It's a good name. Yes it's not an unusual name - we know a good few Archies.

We chose an little used name for our second daughter and hadn't come across anyone named this before but the midwife said she'd delivered two girls the same evening (mine included) being given this name after not hearing it used for years.

Anyway she's 10 now and we've met a good few kids with her name. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/07/2021 08:57

I think it's sad you picked a name to be edgy instead of choosing it because you really liked it.

And I can't help but thinking that the link to a certain royal baby is what's bugging you the most - which I think is just silly.

just be glad you didn't name your kid Karen

viques · 09/07/2021 08:57

OP, I read an article about the top 20 woke baby names in Australia. One of them is Talon. Surely only acceptable if you then name your daughter Cuticle.

There now, doesn’t that make Archie look like a reasonable and desirable name?

stayathomer · 09/07/2021 08:57

I really love that name. Am in Ireland and nobody has it, hopefully you'll fall back in love with it as a name

Youdiditanyway · 09/07/2021 08:57

My 10 year old DD’s name wasn’t even in the top 100 when she was born, I don’t even think it was top 200 but now it’s in the top 20 so I feel your pain completely. Almost pains me to hear endless toddlers named that because it was just so rare when she was born.

Lucia574 · 09/07/2021 08:58

It’s popular because it’s a great name! I bet it suits him.

SpeakingFranglais · 09/07/2021 08:58

But Archie hasn’t just got popular, I know two 18 year olds called Archie.

If you’d picked something else you would have run the risk. There’s always going to be some names that get picked more. DS is 27 he was at school with half a dozen George and Jacks. They rarely get chosen now.

VienneseWhirligig · 09/07/2021 08:58

I don't regret DS's name as such - but when I named him it was a family name that is a classic, but I had only ever known two people with the name in my life. At 21, I didn't think to pore through lists of names to check for popularity - I had chosen the name I would use for a boy when I was much younger, it had meaning and I assumed DS wouldn't grow up like I had as a "Katie G" with the other Katies in his class, because I knew nobody else with a baby with his name. Fool. His closest friend, born a week before him, has the same first name and his surname is only one letter different (eg Robert Davies/Robert Davis), they have been inseparable since meeting at nursery at 3, going through primary and secondary school together, and having to be known by different variations of their first name (eg Rob/Robbie) because they can't be differentiated by surname.

AnyFucker · 09/07/2021 08:59

Archie is a great name

I thought you were going to say Tyler Smile

Rainallnight · 09/07/2021 09:00

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba OP, didn’t say anything about choosing it because it was edgy. She said she chose it because she always liked it.

MadeOfStarStuff · 09/07/2021 09:02

YABU for choosing a popular name then being upset that it’s popular Hmm Archie has been popular for a while, it’s not a sudden thing since Harry and Meghan used it.

You used a name you’ve loved for a long time, and it’s a nice name. Most importantly, it’s your sons name!

sailmeaway · 09/07/2021 09:02

Could be worse, you could have a daughter called Alexa...

the80sweregreat · 09/07/2021 09:02

Archie is a lovely name.
I didn't like ds2's name for a while, but it did suit him. Naming babies is hard.

Paddingtonitspaddingtonbear · 09/07/2021 09:03

I love the name Archie 😊

thedancingbear · 09/07/2021 09:04

It's a lovely name.

I've got triplets, and all three of them are called Archie.

Honestmary · 09/07/2021 09:09

You should call him Gary, no-ones calling their kids that nowadays, bet he would be the only kid one in school with that name 😀

EleanorOlephantisjustfine · 09/07/2021 09:11

It’s a lovely name. I don’t think it’s that unusual for children to have pet names or even use their middle name. Our daughter is called Anna Elizabeth but we call her Betty. She’s always been called that since she was born. Does he have a middle name you prefer. I suppose more importantly does he like his name (I know he’s probably a bit young to tell you yet).
