Bike helmet

My son got a new bike today and I was talking with my mum about it and said I will get him a helmet, she started laughing and said that he doesn’t need a helmet and he will look ridiculous! He’s 7?! 7 year olds still use helmets surely?

I’ve never seen kids riding without a helmet. Where I live all kids wear helmets and most adults. Your mum is about 20 years out of touch.

No helmet, no wheels here. A nephew sustained a nasty head concussion and was in hospital for a week after coming off.
Then there’s this (went viral at the time so I feel comfortable sharing) that I reshare every year when it pops up on memories. Is it really worth it for the sake of not looking ‘silly’?

When I was at school a classmates brother died on his bike, if he'd been wearing a helmet he probably would have survived.

My kids, however old, will always have to wear a helmet whilst I am providing the bike! DH and I bought helmets for our family bike rides to practice what we preach as it were, it is moronic to not wear a helmet. I wince at teenagers cycling to school without them.

PumpkinKlNG · 09/07/2021 11:55

Yeh where we are a lot of people don’t wear them, I definitely don’t see any teenagers wearing them, so I think when she was saying he will look ridiculous she must be thinking about a 17 year old being laughed at by his mates not a 7 year old! They use those electric scooters round here as well without helmets.

There is no rule in the UK that says you have to wear cycle helmets, so no, adults are not "supposed" to wear them.

I do think they are a good idea for small children as they are very likely to fall off and not as likely to be going over 12mph after which helmets don't protect as well, if at all. It is also essential that the helmet is on properly as TooBored said.

I've cracked a helmet in a fall went any other kid on a bike crashed into me, age 11 while doing cycling proficiency!!!!

Helmets also stopped me bashing my face in a few falls as a kid.

I'm 25 and still wear one, my 2 year old wears one on her bike or mine.

I don't expect it to safe me in an accident with a lorry but just falling off yeah, I'd feather be wearing the helmet.

I make my DS wear a high vis vest as well as a helmet. Anything to make him more visible and keep him as safe as I can

All my kids wear helmets for bike, scooter, roller blades and skateboard. I also wear my helmet when riding my bike but I admit i didn't initially but then thought a bit more and it's not worth the risk And i need to role model the right behaviour for my kids anyway. I've also got myself some protection for my skateboard as I'm a bit wobbly. I probably should wear my helmet too for this and my roller blades but currently i don't. I don't risk being bumped by car with those at least. Also helmet for skiing. I did not have helmets for skiing when growing up but I'm glad things have changed.

And yes hi vis for the kids too if going on the road.
