My dog bit a cat 😪

Bluetoybear · 08/07/2021 18:00

Please be kind as I am so stressed over this.. name changed for this SadI have a 7 year old dog which is only walked on a lead 3 times a day in local park and let out in my back garden throughout the day for a wee etc. My back garden has a 6 foot fence around it so my dog can't get out. Yesterday the neighbours cat jumped into my garden and my dog ran after it and bit it on its legSad. My neighbour has taken the poor cat to the vets and has had a big vets bill for it and neighbours husband has came round at tea time demanding I pay it all. He was very vocal about it and said if I don't pay it he will 'sue/take me to court/get in touch with authority's saying my dog is dangerous etc. I am so worried as the cat has awful injuries. I have offered to pay half out of goodwill but neighbours telling me I need to pay all of the bill which I can't afford.

@sunshinesupermum

their cat should be insured and not in your garden

How do you prevent a cat entering a garden? Asking for a friend.

Sorry OP but I'm guessing the responsibility is all yours. [flowers}

Your guess is completely wrong.
GettingItOutThere · 09/07/2021 20:50

how is going OP? hubby been round?

Actually cannot believe the number of comments regarding dog training.

I have a sight hound. No amount of training will dull down my dogs natural instinct. If he sees an animal of any sort, he will chase. I’ve warned my cat owning neighbours that if their pets roam into our garden, there may be issues, because he is fast.

They understand this completely.

You cannot train natural instinct out of a dog!! 🙄

EKGEMS · 09/07/2021 21:14

@Neondisco A dog is territorial and pack oriented-a strange animal is a trespassing interloper and it is in a dog's protective nature to challenge its presence. You cannot train a dog not to react to a strange cat. It is in its nature and is NOT a negative to judge a dog owner!!!!!!

Apologies for my ignorance: is a sight hound the same as a guide dog?

Nope 'sighthound' refers to a category of dog breeds bred primarily for fast and accurate sight that they use to hunt over long distances - mostly in flat landscapes where sight is a key sense for detecting prey.

e.g. salukis hunting in Arabic deserts.

Great eyesight and a modified eye shape makes it easier for them to spot movement on the horizon; light and strong bodies mean they have great speeds to catch them.

Includes greyhounds, whippets etc.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 09/07/2021 21:24

My sighthound can reach speeds of 45mph. Hopefully all the neighbourhood dcats have read such a fact!

Shade17 · 09/07/2021 21:30

And can go from stationary to max speed in 6 strides. Like fucking missiles!

waterSpider · 09/07/2021 21:33

@headintheproverbial

They can't sue you! They don't have a leg to stand on. Your dog was safely secured in your private property and you're perfectly entitled to have it that way!!
"They can't sue you! They don't have a leg to stand on."

Yes, and neither does their cat.

[apologies for terrible humour].

30degreesandmeltinghere · 09/07/2021 21:43

Thread needs lightening up. Op and her ddog are not wrong here...

Neondisco · 09/07/2021 22:05

@Hippee

Neondisco - I hope you have trained your cat not to shit in other people's gardens. No? Unfortunately the rest of us just have to suck it up.
What's that hot to do with anything?

My cat uses litter so I have actually. But if she did shit in another persons garden its not going to cause injury and pain to another animal.

Feels like you're a bit pressed by my comment? Have you also got a badly trained dog?

LST · 09/07/2021 22:07

@Neondisco and your cat has never hunted? No? Or are you ignoring all the posters asking you that? Or how about training it not to roam out of your own garden?

Neondisco · 09/07/2021 22:07
@Neondisco Bet your free roaming cat attacks more animals on a weekly basis than the OP’s dog has done in its whole life.
Wtf? Why would you say that? Have you also got a dog which is badly trained? It's fucking embarrassing how easily I can tell all the pressed dog owners who couldn't be fucked training there little babies

Also not sure why the dog owners are getting so hurt when I actually said it wasn't op's fault? It's like you all think you're entitled to mot train your dogs.

FrenchBoule · 09/07/2021 22:07

Of course cat shitting in somebody’s garden is not going to hurt anybody.
Except shitting in the strawberries that my family would eat,dig up anything planted and shit in there.

As others have mentioned - no.

Sight hounds primarily hunt by sight and speed, rather than by scent.

It’s impossible to train this out of a dog of this type.

snowwhit3 · 09/07/2021 22:11

@Neondisco it's instinct over training. My neighbour had a retired police dog so excellently trained and the best trained dog I've ever come across. It would still chase a cat.

Have you trained your cat not to chase mice or birds?

Sorry @FrenchBoule, meant that for @Neondisco

Good evening everybody... My calm and collected husband went next door to speak to neighbour. He explained that seeing that there cat was in our garden we are not to blame for what sadly happened to the cat, and the kind offer I made to pay for half of vet fees has now been withdrawn. And he is never again to come banging on our door when I am in the house alone. Well that went down like a lead balloon!!! He told OH he is going to report us to the police, report us to council and take 'legal advice' which my husband said he is more than welcome to do. We don't know how the cat is or what injuries it has as they wouldn't tell us. They wouldn't tell us if the cat had been bitten or had injured itself trying to get out over the fence. The nice neighbour across the road has had a word with my husband to let him know that him next door has been slagging us off about it all and to take no notice. (he has also had trouble before with next door man complaining about them parking outside their own house). So I will just let things run their course now and see if we hear from police/council /his legal advice. My dog is a quiet dog and if any police etc were to come to my door they could come in and see for themselves that our dog wouldn't even bark at them or jump up etc when they enter. Thank you for all your help and advice Flowers

Let them carry on then op. You've been more than accomodating and he was being a complete arse last night. You could have quite easily have reported him for that alone. I am glad your other neighbour is on your side too.
Sillawithans · 09/07/2021 22:17

I think half of the bill was the least you could but hey ho.

But you're the numpty who thinks the OP's dog should be put down. So your opinion is of no value.
theweedonkeyfella · 09/07/2021 22:21

Thanks for the update OP. Your neighbour is an idiot and a bully so he'll just look stupid involving the police and council. If your husband is away often you might want to think about one of those ring type doorbells for a bit of added security.
