To think cyclists shouldn’t be on pavements, and certainly shouldn’t expect pedestrians to move for them.

I was walking home just now, when a bloke on a bike came right up behind me and said ‘can I get past please’. I was that taken a back I actually moved for him! But then if he’s arrogant and entitled enough to ask me to move, he’s not going to take kindly to me pointing out he should be on the road is he? Surely he should have moved onto the road, which wasn’t even that busy BTW, to pass me? Or ideally been on the road full stop.

YADNBU but I agree, he was unlikely to be pleasant if you challenged him.

Muddydoor · 08/07/2021 16:27

You could always say no. I get off my bike for pedestrians, and where I can I go on the road. Is it a dual use path? These are not always clearly signposted.

PickAChew · 08/07/2021 16:30

Our council has had the bright idea of shared cycle and footpaths. Some cyclists feel it's OK to ride at full pelt on them, as if they were on the road. It's bloody dangerous.

GoldenLabbie · 08/07/2021 16:30

No it’s not a dual use path, it’s a bog standard pavement. He was wearing full cycling gear, helmet etc so was safe to be on the road. He was just an entitled arse.

Really pisses me off (unless it's a child, obviously!).

motogogo · 08/07/2021 16:34

Our pavements are shared use with a line down, I've asked to get past when groups are spread across, politely

Backhills · 08/07/2021 17:07

He was clearly cycling at a sedate and safe pace and was polite. He let you know he was there rather than trying to squeeze past, really how much of a hardship is it to move over a bit?

Ideally he wouldn't be on the pavement, but that kind of cyclist doesn't belong on the road either. Cycling's to be encouraged for a number of sensible reasons, but welcome nowhere.

I suspect this thread will dissolve into a "we all hate cyclists" thread. They shouldn't be on pavements but many drivers are dangerous and aggressive towards them if they go on the roads.

He stopped and asked if he could get by, he didn't just cycle at you and expect you to move. As long as he didn't expect you to walk in the gutter I can't really see the issue and he takes up less space on his bike than he would walking alongside it.

And as far as riding side by side is concerned, it is lawful and makes driver do what they are supposed to do which is to go to the other side of the road to overtake (and yes, that does mean you have to wait until the road is clear!)

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 08/07/2021 17:39

Pisses me off too, I don't hear well, luckily I usually have my Dh with me who hears them.
Dh bikes all be it slowly now and always gets off for pedestrians.

drpet49 · 08/07/2021 17:40

I don’t mind children on bikes on the pavement but not adults on their own.

ZaraW · 08/07/2021 17:41

@30degreesandmeltinghere

Cyclists shouldn't even be on the road imo. Cycle paths only.. Sat at a roundabout waiting to go in a city centre, entitled cyclist drove across my path, wobbled, sat on my bonnet, regained his balance and cycled off!! Not even a nod or apology!! Or stuck behind 2 riding side by side on a main road. Entitled twats most of them...
You also come across as extremely entitled....
Mummyneedsacoffee · 08/07/2021 17:47

He asked politely and was clearly going at sensible pace. If he can use it .. why shouldn’t he? Maybe he’s not confident on the road atm..? And maybe he’s too slow on the road so safer on the dual use pavement. You’re making a big deal out of nothing.. sorry!

@30degreesandmeltinghere … why shouldnt they be on roads… on a road bike? You’ve clearly had a few bad experiences but not all of us are “entitled twats” most of the time its bad driving causing the issues .. not cyclists.

Muddydoor · 08/07/2021 17:48

Cyclists can’t even rely on cycle paths as lots of people park across them. On my road, drivers bomb along at scary speeds, making overtaking parked cars very scary.

Surprised about your cyclist, though. Round here, the only ones you can be sure will be on the road are the cycle gear lot. People in normal clothes are more likely to be on the path.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 08/07/2021 17:54

What happens if I hit one? They aren't insured so who fixes my car?
Car users pay to use the roads...

safariboot · 08/07/2021 17:55

If he had been walking, would you have come here and started a walker-bashing thread?

Yes, cycling on the pavement is against the law. So are loads of things loads of car drivers do all the time. There was in this case no real risk to anyone.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/07/2021 17:57

Surprised at the posters who think he was fine to be on the pavement. There’s a reason why it’s not allowed.

Changechangychange · 08/07/2021 17:58

If you hit them, you are at fault and your insurance will be paying out, same as when you hit other cars, surely?
SummaLuvin · 08/07/2021 17:58

My biggest pet peeve, I actively stay in the way of cyclists on a pavement (not if it's dual purpose) DH hates it as he thinks I might get hurt one day, which is fair, but it makes me so angry. They ding their bell and continue going at rapid speed, but if someone is deaf or has headphones in they might not hear. I hate the excuse of them not feeling safe on the road, that doesn't give them the right to make the pavement unsafe for pedestrians.

Emanchego · 08/07/2021 18:00

My commute only takes less than 10 minutes and it's amazing I haven't been killed yet. No, I don't weave in and out of traffic either. I see other cyclists on the pavement wearing helmets etc and to be honest I envy them

Backhills · 08/07/2021 18:02

You know your life would be so much nicer if you just smile at the pleasant interaction, wish them a nice day and get on with yours. It must be exhausting to be constantly pissed off.

MadeOfStarStuff · 08/07/2021 18:02

YANBU

It especially annoys me when it’s quiet residential streets that aren’t remotely dangerous for cyclists. If you can’t cycle down a simple quiet road safely then you shouldn’t be cycling in public at all.

EssentialHummus · 08/07/2021 18:05

“See that big grey thing to your right? It’s a road. Thank me later.”

bunnytheegghunter · 08/07/2021 18:06

I hate this! Lockdown was the start of it for me,as the cyclists seemed to multiplying of nowhere 🤣 I walk 3 miles to work and 3 miles back there is a cycle path along about a mile of the long long bloody road. There is a shared path for about 100 yards the rest is pedestrian only or cyclists only but the bloody cyclists refuse to use the cycle path but insist on the most direct straight path that is for pedestrians only 😡 half of them nearly knock you over flying past. I've become such a grumpy moaning ninny at them now, when someone rings the bell I shout use the bloody cycle path not your stupid bell 😱😳

msbevvy · 08/07/2021 18:08

I am hard of hearing and am terrified of cyclists and electric scooters on the pavement as I am totally unaware of them behind me.

It doesn't help that I was once robbed at a cashpoint by a cyclist. Another time I had one crash into my back at speed when I was pushing a wheelchair down a towpath. He then proceeded to shout at us and then rode off without checking if we were ok.
