To Not Know If This Is Normal Or Not

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 07/07/2021 20:40

DS is 16 months and for the last 3days has had a horrible cold/cough which is making him pretty miserable. Last night he coughed so much he threw up (all over me!) and just now within a few minutes of settling him to bed he coughed a couple of times then sat up and did a huge vomit again.
I haven’t been able to get a sodding GP appointment this week and in any case am
I even allowed to enter the GP surgery if he has a cough?!
I’m a really anxious person and I’m getting paranoid he could have bronchitis or pneumonia or something.
Please can someone reassure me this is normal, or should I be worried and calling 111 for an out of hours appointment?
Thanks! Xx

I hate to be ‘that’ poster but have you done a covid test? I would imagine you can’t get a dr’s appointment (face to face at least) without this and that would be their first port of call?

covetingthepreciousthings · 07/07/2021 20:43

One of the first things they'll probably ask is have you done a Covid test? If you're worried, I would call 111 though if you're having no luck with GP.

AnotherDayAnotherCake · 07/07/2021 20:44

FWIW I’ve called 111 for advice a few times and found them to be quite good, even got a call back from a very knowledgeable GP once, in the middle of the night.

Is his coughing better or worse at particular times of the day?

mayblossominapril · 07/07/2021 20:47

My dd who is 11 months keeps coughing and vomiting. She’s a vomiter at the best of times so she’s is really going for it atm.
Sometimes if they have sniffed and swallowed the mucous it will come back later or it could be they are coughing so hard they are sick.
If you’re not sure book a gp appointment we’ve had a few when dd has been coughing and it’s been fine. She had croup then later a chest infection
Listed to croup on YouTube to check it’s not a croup cough because if that gets worse you will need steroids. Via 111 if it’s out of hours

HumpHumpWhale · 07/07/2021 20:47

Mine definitely did that a few times. Sensitive gag reflex, he used to vomit at the drop of a hat. If he doesn't seem very ill - like, he's not really miserable, doesn't have a high temperature, eating and drinking OK, etc, I wouldn't be worried.

Definitely do a covid test...but yes, my DC have coughed so much they have been sick when they've had ordinary colds before (pre covid)

My DS has also made himself sick from crying too hard once or twice...

Quartz2208 · 07/07/2021 20:49

DS used to do it all the time - so much so that after a few times of doing it at school (pre COVID) and then having 48 hours off it was on his file that if he coughed and vomited he didnt need to be sent home

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 07/07/2021 20:50

If I cough a lot then I throw up too. But as others have said, you'll need to do a pcr test.

Thereareliterallynonamesleft · 07/07/2021 20:51

My son also had this last night - our family has a tendency towards asthma and his older sister used to get the same thing. Whenever she got a cold/virus, it would go to her chest, and she used to get a lot of bronchiolitis and viral wheeze, which we could mostly manage at home with an inhaler (after we were first given one in A&E). If it is that, the main thing to look out for is quick, shallow breathing (sometimes you can’t hear/notice it, but if you lift up their top you can see how fast their chest is moving).

cupcakecourageous · 07/07/2021 20:51

I'd really only worry if he stops drinking and/or develops a high temperature.

redandwhite1 · 07/07/2021 20:53

My husband threw up if he'd just eaten while he had his COVID cough - defo get a test done for peace of mind

KILNAMATRA · 07/07/2021 22:01

Snotty kids will vomit on you it’s there way of bringing up mucous.. as long as he’s having wet nappies .. if he has a temperature give him calool and water or milk or ANYTHING he ll suck or drink.. if you’re worried do ring 111

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 07/07/2021 22:16

Thankyou everyone for your replies, he had Calpol earlier but then threw up so not sure how much he actually ingested, he hasn’t been eating masses but am giving him lots of boob for comfort etc and he is having wet nappies.
I called 111 who said they will make a referral to my GP and if I call the surgery tomorrow I should get an appointment to get his chest checked etc
Thanks again for your replies everyone xx

No one will see youwotha cough and no covid test.

But yes my kids have had this on occasion around the same age. I found making sure the room was humid helped (got worse if we were somewhere with air con like a car) and also lying down made them worse. And big meals.

Gumboots29 · 07/07/2021 22:27

My DS who is now 4 does this. He does it when he’s got a cold that is making him really congested or when he’s coughing a lot.

Defo trip to the GP (They’ll almost definitely ask about a covid test though). Mine was doing it every few days for a week or so. When I finally got to see the GP it was a winter wheeze and they gave him an inhaler. Stopped it almost straight away and we only need to use it in the winter.
