Covid test on baby

Would you allow a PCR test to be done on an 11 month old? (No close contact with a positive case and no symptoms but it’s been requested)

She has had a negative lateral flow at home done by me and was very very distressed

Yabu- just do the test
Yanbu- I wouldn’t allow it

If they weren't sick then not a hope would I do that to my small child.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2021 19:42

Who is requesting it?

FawnFrenchieMum · 07/07/2021 19:43

Requested by who for what reason?

Going into hospital for example then yes I would. To visit someone just in case, then no I wouldn’t.

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 07/07/2021 19:43

It depends on circumstances. Why is it required?

I had one done on my 13 month old they were brilliant with her and she hardly flinched. We did one at home and she went bananas

WillowGrand · 07/07/2021 19:44

Depends why

rainbowfairydust · 07/07/2021 19:44

If it was once every 8 weeks or so then yes as I think they would forget (and forgive), if weekly then no

MonkeyPuddle · 07/07/2021 19:44

I did one on my 8 month old today as she had a cough, she cried for maybe 20 seconds. But I wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t clinically indicated.

Namechngeforthis · 07/07/2021 19:44

Nursery requested. as a staff member from another class has tested positive. She has not been in contact with her and they are in different ‘bubbles’. It has not been put across like it is optional.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2021 19:45

Bizarre. If she's not been in contact with the positive case then why is it required?

SuddenArborealStop · 07/07/2021 19:45

DD had one at 10 months and didn't flinch and one at 17 months which she did cry at but not so much I wouldn't do it again.

FawnFrenchieMum · 07/07/2021 19:45

No I wouldn’t in that case. Especially if she hasn’t been a close contact.

Camomila · 07/07/2021 19:46

If it makes any difference the PCR test is more comfortable than the lateral flow test (it's a wider/softer cotton wool bit at the end, less poky).

Opinion4321 · 07/07/2021 19:46

I had my oldest son tested last year when he was about 14 months and just had my 5 week old tested. Both were unwell although luckily the tests came back negative.

A nurse tested them in hospital and they barely flinched.

You did one or you took them to a test centre for someone else to do it for a pcr?

Lnix · 07/07/2021 19:46

If she isn't a close contact then I definitely wouldn't, and I'd challenge the nursery on their policy.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2021 19:46

Do you just do nostrils on a baby?

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 07/07/2021 19:47

Nursery are being ridiculous. I guess the question is though will they let her into nursery without one? And if not can you take time off work and will you get your money back

Namechngeforthis · 07/07/2021 19:47

They want everyone to do one

OP posts:
Spanglebangle · 07/07/2021 19:49

Generally yes but not in the situation you are describing.

Namechngeforthis · 07/07/2021 19:49

Apparently you try the throat and if not possible you do nostrils, for 15 seconds I think it says

gwenneh · 07/07/2021 19:50

My 18-month old has had them on occasion, to rule it out when she has symptoms. I've done one myself (recent, so she's a bit bigger) and had the testing centre do one about six months ago.

She cried for about 10 seconds each time. I would do it if the nursery requested it.

pigglepot · 07/07/2021 19:50

We had to do one for the same reason. I couldn't take her- my husband did. She was upset for the whole weekend afterwards and both she and my husband were very distressed by the experience. We both agreed we wouldn't do another one if we were asked to again and would rather keep her off instead. So from a personal POV no I wouldn't do it.

Firawla · 07/07/2021 19:50

Absolutely would not

Namechngeforthis · 07/07/2021 19:52

Oh not what I was expecting, I thought I was being precious maybe.

OP posts:
FilthyforFirth · 07/07/2021 19:54

Absolutely not. Madness.
